Boiler & Heating Cover/Service - worth it?

Hello

Was thinking about getting one of these policies, especially as some decent cashback available on Topcashback.

Are they worth it though? Any company recommendations?

Notice some saying covers total breakdown of boilers and heating only. In Past I have had problems with partial breakdown, so that wouldn't be covered then?

Also I have not had my boiler serviced. It is about 5 years old now. Would that prohibit me getting one of these policies?

thanks

No. Get your boiler serviced annually by a local independent RGI, and put the savings in the bank against the possibility of an unscheduled call-out.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

An annual service would be around £80 only though.
    You are paying £204 pa.

I have BG Homecare 200, £17 month, annual inspection and breakdown repair for boiler an dcentral heating....! personally worth it....!

marked as spam....you're promoting BG services. 95% of your posts (at the time of editing this post) are related to BG/Sainsbury's energy and their services aswell....

Wait till something 'powerflush' related kocks you heat exchanger out and they wont fix it. (Happened to my dad).

As said, annual service, and save the cash.

Yes its worth it imhe although I do currently work for a service provider

1 callout a month plus a fan and pcb with British gas on a baxi solo comes to 204

Same with an independant would cost about 1000, if and when they could be bothered / have time and if they correctly identified the fault first time as they won't be back to work for a loss after fitting an incorrect part.

Read the t&c's to see what is covered and how, everything that is excluded is clearly spealt out.

Just for a touch of balance. You need to decide the value of the cover based on your own personal circumstances and needs.

    Hello. still interested in this.

Is there any benefit to boiler and radiator cover as opposed to just boiler? What can go wrong with the radiators?

If the boiler works, won't the radiators? Most of the policies seem to exclude sludge which is only radiator problem that springs to mind - though of course i am not a heating engineer so willing to stand corrected.

just don't want to pay for extra things I don't need.

    thanks
  • I've just been looking into this also, and there are so many out there with so many different options.
I ended up putting together a spreadsheet (think your own comparison chart), although it is hard to figure out what is required. So many variables with the whole system.
    For instance...
Your boiler may work, but the thermostat breaks.
Radiators may be fine, but what about my water tank?
    The list can go on....
I do think cover is worth it, if you get 24hr and emergency call out, and you get more than just boiler cover.
However, if you want just boiler cover and don't want the peace of mind of 24hr and emergency call out, many local engineers / plumbers will offer their own warranty for substantially less than larger providers... at least thats what I have discovered.

Agree that it depends on your personal circmunstances. For me it is worth every penny of the 20 quid a month. To add balance I have just had the pump replaced again today (after the last one 16 months ago) all free and sorted so at least for now I am up I reckon. Called them last night at 7 when it gave up the ghost and they were here for 1pm today. That to me is really important as I am a wimp without my heat and hot shower:)

A close friend is a plumber and he is really busy so if a customer calls him out for an emergency its rare he can drop everything and be there in less thann 24hrs (unless its summer of course) My supplier has loads of engineers and can offer a more reliable service (call out wise)

I do get a bit sick of the sales techniques they all do everytime though - new boiler needed madam due to lack of parts, power flush essential at 709 quid oh and a carbon monoxide monitor a snip at 30 quid (less than a tenner at asda ) Thanks to my above plumber mate a quick call confirms what is needed and what is sales.
