San Francisco Swapping Sims

I bought the San Francisco a couple of months ago and son has decided that he wants it. (We are both on PAYG Orange Dolphin)

My plan is to give him mine and me to buy a new SF as I have filled it up to the brim with apps :)

My first question is as we are both on Orange is it just a case of putting his sim into the SF. The SF is not unlocked although I have de-oranged it. I probably won't get a replacement for a couple of weeks at least so would ideally like to swap the sim cards back if I need the phone (I have a couple of long train journeys coming up next week).

Secondly, once the phone is permanently his will I have to delete and reinstall any of the personalised apps such as facebook, twitter, Gmail, etc so that he can log in as him.

Lastly, is there any way I can make use of the sd card for apps (I presume that it is defaulted to only be used for user data rather than the apps themselves.) I didn't think I had put that many on the phone, especially after removing most of the default orange stuff but when I was updating some of the apps a message came up saying space was low on the phone.

The phones are linked to Google accounts, so in reality you'll want to do a factory reset on it, which will remove all the apps as well as well as your Facebook/Twitter stuff etc. Any apps you've installed on this phone will automatically download onto your new phone... Android is smart like that.

To use the SD card for apps you will have to go down the custom ROM path, either one that's based on Android 2.2 for native A2SD support, or one that includes something like DarkTremor A2SD support which will require repartitioning the SD card.

I belive the apps you buy are assinged to your gmail account not the phone least thats how it worked for me when i changed adroidi phones recently
So if you where to reswap sims you would have to reload your apps again

Android 2.2 stock rom move apps to SD card

    Settings.. Applications >> Manage Applications
Select application if application has been written to use the sd card you will see the tab move to SD card .

No need for customized roms but not all apps pre 2.2 have been written to use sd card .

There is every need for custom ROM's as the OSF is only (currently) available with Android 2.1 ;)

  • If you've used clockwork recovery to flash the de-orangated rom. Then you can use the clockwork built-in backup and restore facilities that will take a snapshot of the phones current state on the sdcard. When you get the new phone use the same sdcard and do a restore to get the exact phone setup.

    Hope that helps.
  • I followed the instructions on the Monaco website to de orange it and used the Titanium and Androot. I also use Appbrain.

I think I might wait until I get the other phone then put my sim in the new phone and then set that up first. I will have a look at the apps I have on appbrain and then weed them out first. Presumably by installing Appbrain first then my original apps will sync to the new phone.

Then put son's sim card into my old SF and do a factory reset then set up a google account for him and an Appbrain account then sync the phone. (It won't be too onerous to select the same apps that ar eon my account) - I enjoy playing around with anything techy so long as I know what I am doing.

  • Bought my second SF now and am going to factory reset my original one and set it up for my son. I have already set up his Google account and will use Appbrain.

If I take the SD card out of the original phone before the factory reset (and put the new blank SD card in), when I come to set up the new phone and reinstall my apps on the new phone will it keep the user data for the apps (ie Angry Birds, Alchemy, etc).

Why would you bother resetting yours to give to him when you can just give the new, unused one straight to him with no messing? Seems silly to me.

And no, no app data will be preserved. You'll need a backup program such as Titanium for that.
  • Make sure you unlock your phone before you install custom software as not all roms have software to handle the unlocking (the Orange firmware does).
