will car fail MOT with engine light on?

Options
My car is due an MOT next month.

The engine light is on. My mechanic did a diagnostic and said that it was the EGR valve.

Putting aside the fact that it's not a great idea to drive with the light on..

1) Will it fail the MOT with the light on?

2) What's the cheapest fix?

Thanks.

Your car wont fail just because the light is on, but because of the fuel system being out of kilter, it may fail the emissions test.

I had a Fiat Bravo and the engine light kept coming on, after diagnostics, nothing came up and it passed every MOT with it on. They did ask first if I knew it was on and did I want them to proceed but it wasn't an issue when it came to passing.

Lights dont just come on the dash to help illuminate the speedo!

There will be a fault somewhere, and EGR will potentially effect the Turbo/Cat/Lambda, which are all pricey to fix if left until the properly go wrong. Get it checked out properly, and fixed, but as stated above it shouldn't effect the MOT unless emmissions are too high as a result of the fault.

My OH's Ford Ka had the same problem - light was on for the best part of two years, never had a single fault on it and it was always fine on service and MOT's

True, but the question was will it fail a mot?, and it won't. The only thing on the dash that will fail an MOT is the ABS light, because that is the self check of the braking system

Cheapest fix is to clean the EGR valve - free if you DIY.

Alternatively get a new one fitted.

I'd take the EGR and clean it.

Depending on the car that is of course.

I know on my car it's just above the turbo and easily accessed. 2 10mm bolts hold it on. Take it off and clean in penetrating fluid like petrol etc to remove the carbon build up.

As others have said if you continue to drive the car with a blocked EGR, you are asking for your turbo to go bang. Do a search on google if you must but EGR faults are not to be ignored

...but warnings are there for a reason. It may be to tell you that you have a water leak, which if you got checked, could be a new seal for a few quid...but if left to fester (because it's only a warning) could lead to a major leak and head gasket gone?

    Proactive rather than reactive.
