Total respect for you rugal.
These guys were hard on you, and - frankly - I would have said the same things even more forcefully.
But you manned up and instead of whining like so many other posters that it's not your fault, it's the banks, you've accepted responsibility and also proactively taken steps to reduce the burden.

It would be a nice feature for an alleged technologically forward thinking organization. I am surprised that it is not yet available.

Try getting through to a credit control department, I had something similar to you about two years ago with Smile. I didn't have a o/d facility, but got a £5 charge for something or other after I'd stopped using (and checking!) the account. It put me £0.85p overdrawn
£450 worth of charges upon charges (something like £5/day for an unauthorised overdraft, plus a heap load of random charges) I get a "collection call" from them demanding final payment. Errr, what!?
Luckily for me and my naivety, Smile eventually waived all the charges and closed the account for me after a VERY tearful 3 hr phone call.
Persevere, beg, and write letters explaining your point. The worst they can say is "no".0 -

It's time the OFT looked at unpaid Direct Debit charges. Nowadays it's not even possible to leave an account empty and forget about it. A DD comes in that you don't want to pay - some subscription or insurance that you don't want to maintain. You never said you wanted to renew it, but they've got automatic renewal in the small print. Or else you cancelled it, but they ignored that.
So the bank slaps on an unpaid item charge, for doing nothing, and the next thing you know, you've got a huge overdraft on an account that's not supposed to have an overdraft facility, made up entirely out of bank charges for automated "services". Actual cost to the bank, postage + paper + about 0.01p."It will take, five, 10, 15 years to get back to where we need to be. I think that is a fair point. Although it is also an argument for closing unused accounts or paying more attention to the small print.
It might be better if automated renewal of DD's were abolished.Not as green as I am cabbage looking0
