Ridiculous overdraft charge

Hi guys,

first posting, long time reader, i have recently come back home from working in london a few months and came home with loads of nationwide letters and said i was overdrawn by £226 pounds, i phone up and said how was this possible, they said it had started a unpaid direct debit of £25, so i said to them why didnt you call me to pay this off, but for months they added £20 pound charges, £2 interest, there was one point they added a £90 overdraft fee, i mean !!!!!!???, i told them im not paying it thats ridiculous, im i in the right here is there anything i can do? your guidance is most appreciated.

Taking your bat home and not paying is likely to trash your credit rating. If you want a loan, mortgage, credit card, mobile phone contract or overdraft from anybody in the next 6 years you may find it difficult.

You need to take a more pragmatic approach. I would suggest politely explaining your circumstances, explaining why you didn't know the state of affairs on your account (no access to a PC, statements not received etc) and politely ask them to waive some or all of the charges.
  • Agreed.

Oh and you have paid these charges as you are now liable for the overdrawn balance on the account, if you bury your head in the sand you arent going to get anywhere with this. This obviously assumes that the original direct debit was correct to come out of the account?

Yep I agree, it's up to you to run your account properly, it's not your banks job to call you etc

Sorry, but you are not quote: "in the right".

It is not the banks job to baby-sit their customers. If you were going away from home for a few months (not long enough to worry about re-directing mail) then you should have taken steps to ensure things ran smoothly while you were away (not just your bank account).

I presume you have a debit/cash card, internet or phone banking? If so, there is no excuse as to why you couldn't keep an eye on your finances.

I very much doubt, even if you go in and ask nicely, that they will waive the charges, as due to the length of time they will probably cite negligence on your part.

Your just going to have to stump up. Your credit rating will most likely already have been hit - it is time to save as much face as possible.

Suggest you change the post title to Ridiculous account conduct - you're lucky it's not with a collections agency by now.

My God, that's not the way, you're supposed to come back and tell us to mind our own business, tell we don't know your situation and your one legged dog need a crucial flange operation :rotfl:

Seriously, well done for getting a grip of the situation and getting it sorted, the money saved is a bonus :)

London is a nefarious hot spot for forgetting ones responsibilities. The bright lights may be disorientating.
Is there a way of viewing your nationwide balance on a mobile phone ?

    Total respect for you rugal.

These guys were hard on you, and - frankly - I would have said the same things even more forcefully.

But you manned up and instead of whining like so many other posters that it's not your fault, it's the banks, you've accepted responsibility and also proactively taken steps to reduce the burden.

    Good work.
