Nice to hear. Well done!blondeonblonde wrote: »Managed to install ubuntu by using a different usb and copying from the dvd to the usb. Delighted!
Yes I guess. When a CD first comes out, there are no updates for a short while. Then updates for security and bug fixes trickle down at a few a week maybe, some small, some big. After a while, a new install needs a good catch up with updates. 'Long Term Support (LTS)' versions such as Ubuntu 10.04 get re issued after a while to include a tranch of updates, then they are renumbered as for example, 10.04.1. We are just aproaching a new issue as 10.04.2 but it is not quite here yet, so an install of say 10.04.1 will be looking at a lot of updates just now. However, netbook has been updating now for over two hours, is this normal?
Other versions such as Ubuntu 10.10 (the numbers mean 2010, October) also get updates all the time and as the weeks go by, a new installation also needs a good catch up.

I know lots of people who are using Ubuntu but none are using Avast, or any other virus scanner. There is a reason for this. Virus scanners that you know and love, are scanning for Windows viruses. So if you are running something like a mail server system - which will obviously handle mostly Windows mail and files, and send them onwards to (Windows) clients, then a virus scanner is a good idea and is normally used. But it is in place to protect the onward clients, not to protect your own Ubuntu PC.also downloaded avast for ubuntu, ran a scan and
If you really want to use one, then maybe consider clamav, it is in the Ubuntu repository (Ubuntu Software Centre).
By the way, it is best to use the Ubuntu software centre for getting new stuff and try to avoid outside sources, even if they are big companies, if you can.0 -
I would suggest that you get a hosts file from MVPS.org and incorporate that into your /etc/hosts file too, it is quite effective in stopping a lot of those annoying little redirections that you come across too like adservers..4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . To be fair if she thinks like that then others will to and use it without worrying about what they are exactly using.debitcardmayhem wrote: »Oh dear pet

If you are using "Ubuntu" then to remove programs go to "applications" / "Ubuntu Software Centre"
then search for "Avast" then click "remove" (It should be the same for "Ubuntu Netbook Remix" but not sure)
As for updating, a fresh install is probably a few months old and you'll have about 100Mb-200Mb of updates to catch up on.
Just let it run. it's set to check for updates daily (if their are any, they will only be a few mb each)
You probably won't need avast, but you should install "AddBlock Plus" for firefox, that will cut out 80% of adds and popupsLaters

I run xubuntu on an old PC and it is such a joy to be able to turn it on and 90 seconds later I'm on line. At times it can be a bit jerky but I can cope with that.0
