Please help me install ubuntu

Hi all
Could someone help me install ubuntu on my acer aspire one?
Its 2 years old running linux and i have followed advice on here to create a usb with ubuntu.
Acer will not boot from the usb, even if set to boot from there it just seems to ignore it.
I would like to replace the os or even reset to factory default if possible. Can anyone help? I have a recovery dvd and a spare pc but am not clear on the instructions from the supplied sheet.......
Many thanks in advance, fingers crossed..........

First thing I'd do is try a different USB stick (or try the stick in another PC).

If you press F12 on startup and select USB, it should boot from the USB. If not, it suggests that the system either has not been copied on correctly, or that the USB port/stick is playing up

agree with the above, the other issue could be a duff download so re downloading and setting it up again on the usb stick would be another option
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)
  • I have a similar issue. My Acer Aspire One will not boot at all "insert boot device and press any key" I tried all the options on threads eg d2d recovery, F10 etc...

I downloaded Ubuntu last night onto sd card and tried to boot from USB card reader with the download on the sd card in the reader did not recognise it for booting but found it in the boot sequence in the bios.

Does this need to be download to USB stick? What size is the Ubuntu OS?

I think you need to make a bootable usb drive using the USB startup disk creator. Follow the instructions here:

This sounds crucial. On my Asus eeepc 900, I have to press the Escape key at the time when the Asus spash screen is showing briefly, and *then* I get offered a boot menu.

btw I have always got good results from unetbootin.

You need to make the USB Stick "bootable" or the computer will not know what to do even though it is plugged in and the computer has been instructed to boot from the USB.

I think I used a utility from HP when I did mine? (EDIT: this was a Windows utility)

  • Managed to install ubuntu by using a different usb and copying from the dvd to the usb. Delighted!
However, netbook has been updating now for over two hours, is this normal? also downloaded avast for ubuntu, ran a scan and got lots of access denied errors. passwords are accepted got key from avast etc. Am i doing something wrong or just impatient?
many thanks for all the replies.
  • Don't currently use ubuntu, though I have in the past. I've spent hours updating a Linux install, so I wouldn't get too worried just yet.

The access denied messages are probably because you are scanning as a user and the system is denying you and Avast access because you don't have sufficient authority. I think you are trying to scan outside your /home directory. Only root has sufficient authority to access the whole system. On Debian / ubuntu and their siblings root access is gained by using the sudo command. I would strongly advise you don't use root access, my experience is there aren't any Linux viruses in the wild but you can stuff your system up quicker than any virus by misuse of root privileges. Just scan the /home folder. I've used various Linuxes since 2001 and the only use I've found for a virus scanner is to scan files before passing them on to Windows systems.

Incidentally, there is a thread over at the ubuntu forums about your install problem or something similar to it. I can't post links as the forum won't allow it, but if you google it you should get the webpage.
