What's the best way to sell a car on ebay ?
As the title suggests
Buy it Now,
Classified,
Auction,
Best Offer ??
and is there any way I can keep the idiots away from my listing ??!! (last time I sold a car on there some numpty pressed BIN with no intention of buying and I got lumbered with some fees !)
I would value your opinions !

Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.

difficult one to keep the messers form bidding/buying.
i normally list as auction and put starting price fairly low with a reserve set at the min i will take to encourage bids.
i also state in listing no messers people with low feedback to contact me before bidding or i will cancel the bids.
make sure you also state deposit required by paypal within 24 hours of auction end or the transaction is cancelled.0 -

That'll just get you a non performing seller, no sale, and you'll lose your fees.
It'll also keep most genuine buyers away.0 -

i disagree sold several cars on the fleabay and always state deposit required and cars have sold buyer has also paypalled the £100-200 deposit i requested. It is no different to buying a car from elsewhere garages request a depo as do private sellers who hold a car until the buyer picks it up
i have also purchased cars and found many people also request the same.
i suspect it is probably as a result of all the @rse holes on there that bid and dont buy??0 -
So youre happy dishing out £100-£200 to someone youve never met for something youve never seen?
Youre also going to have a hard time getting your money back from paypal if things go wrong too.The DWP = Legally kicking the Disabled when they are down.0 -

I believe the idea is you go view the car before you bid, no? silly to bid without a view otherwise your asking to be ripped off
even if the seller does something dodgey, like does a runner, then its protected by paypal. why would you have a hard time, explain0 -
Interested to read responses here as I'm considering selling ours this way very soon. I was also wondering about the paypal deposit issue and can see both sides of the argument. Does seem like most cars on there atm don't ask for this.
As our car would go for £500 absolute max I don't think I'd want to put down half of the price as a deposit!0 -

I too would ask for a small deposit to secure the goods as is common in most businesses where immediate collection isn't possible.0 -
Problem is if the buyer sends the paypal deposit as a gift, which may be what they do as it won't be the usual ebay / paypal link, the buyer wouldn't be protected by the usual guarantees.
probably depends on whether you are asking for a deposit to guarantee the person at least turns up to look at the car once they win the auction, or to guarantee they actually buy it (ie is the deposit refundable). As ebay motor bids aren't binding the person's within their rights to walk away - whether for genuine reasons ie misdescribed, or they are a timewaster. Hoping that a really detailed description would minimise the former... but the latter, a deposit certainly would deter - but they could still win the auction and then not pay deposit, you've still got the hassle of cancelling it and relisting.
Thinking I would definitely be cancelling bids from buyers with no/very low / poor feedback. I am usually quite soft on this when I'm selling random crap from my house that's worth about £3 but not for a car!0 -
Any more opinions on my original question ?Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.0

Well I have sold a car on Ebay last month for the first time. Didn't put BIN but put the minimum I wanted as the reserve price. Had seven watchers after a day, 7 day listing so when a buyer asked for a BIN price I said I would leave the auction to run its course. Only one bid so it sold for the minimum and the bidder was the guy who asked about BIN, he said he would have paid £500 more for BIN!
As for a deposit, tell the successful successful bidder to get in touch within 24 hours and discuss with them. I got full amount in cash 2 days after the sale when he came to collect it.
So no easy answers but for me it sold the car quickly, no problems for the minimum I was prepared to let it go for, just gutted I could have got a bit more.0
