Changing text alert on iphone

Is there any way that I can Change my text alert on my iphone 3GS.

Settings -> sounds -> text tone should do it!

Sorry I should have said that I want to import a diferent tone rather than the ones that are already on the phone,I have imported ringtones via itunes fine but doesn't work with the text alert.

Only if you jailbreak the phone. Once jail broken you can use any tone, but you need to rename it to one of the standard tones and then copy and paste it in using a file manager.

There are a few step by step guides around the net, if you do want to try.

I agree this is a stupid limitation. Every phone I've had for the last few years has let me customise the SMS tone, but now I'm stuck with the limited selection that Apple imposes on me. When I've uploaded several ringtones (including my desired SMS tone) and I can select any of them as standard ringtones, I don't understand why Apple doesn't let me select it as an SMS tone.
