Chaing Mai is great - it just makes a great change from the usual Bangkok + beach trip to Thailand. It's cheaper there (got B&B with a/c for £14 a night) and also the climate isn't so humid. There's lots to do and see in the surrounding area (Elephant trekking scared the life out of me!) and the city itself is great fun at night without a lot of the seediness that you can get in other part of Thailand.
