1st MOT due, lost V5

Hi all
Any advice on this would be much appreciated.
I bought a car back in June 2010 and was under the inpression that it was made in March 2008. It was in fact Feb 2008 and the MOT expires tomorrow so it will need to go for it's first ever MOT ASAP.
Being a 1st time car owner, I wasn't sure what I needed to take to the garage (I just took everything for my motorbike and I received a letter to remind me to book it in as well) so I looked it up on good old google. There doesn't seem to be a common concensus on what is required and I'm entirely conused now.
Some sites say you need a V5 which I had but have now realised has been misplaced/lost and others say they have never been asked for one.
Can anyone confirm exactly what the garage will require? I'm going to call them and get it booked in 1st thing but realise this will be pointless if they actually require the V5.
Havign a massive panic as, if I do require the documentation, it's going to take weeks and weeks which means that I'm going to have no car for work and I can't travel back over see my partner in Chester (I'm Leeds-ish)
Thanks!

Choose your MOT place.
When you ring them tomorrow, just say "I seem to have mislaid the V5c. That's not going to be a problem, is it?"
If they say they cannot do the MOT without the V5c, then move on to the next MOT place.
I never take anything with me for a test... except the car of course.0 -
I've never needed a V5 doc for an MOT.
The only thing you need is your car and your wallet.0 -

I agree, you don't need a V5... but you will need your car and wallet.0 -
I always take the old mot.0

well its so the mot guy can see it was him that did it last year.
I feel this gives him a sense of mild relaxation that he is not now checking over an unknown shed. Also, he can copy the vin and other details straight off the old cert knowing that he did it last year it'll be fine.
Also, I always take my car for mot before the other runs out, so he will need to see the expiry date to add it on to the new one.0 -
I doubt he cares whether or not he's seen it before. To him its just another ton box to test. And a the MOT is all done on computer linked to VOSA and DVLA, he has no details he needs to copy and he also doesn't need to see the old certificate.0

The VOSA computer automatically adds the remaining time on the old certificate to the new one. You don't need to show them the old one.
Car and wallet always.0 -
The first thing my MoT bloke asks is if I have the old certificate.
He must want it for something.0 -

This is only to check when it runs out so the new one will start accordingly. If you don't have this it used to run from the day of the test.Truth always poses doubts & questions.
