Humax 9300T Help please?

I have a Humax 9300T which I'm happy with.

I don't understand one thing though. Whenever I am recording two channels simultaneously there are very few other channels I can actually watch. I get a greyed out screen with the message THIS CHANNEL IS RESTRICTED BY RECORDING.

I can't find any reference to this in the user manual.

Please can anyone advise me?

Thanks.

It is obvious if you think about it. The Humax has two tuners and if you are using both e.g. recording BBC1 on Mux 1 and recording ITV on Mux 2, then you will be limited to viewing only the other channels that are broadcast on Mux 1 and Mux 2.

as above You can record anything from two muxes and watch any other programme in either of those muxes.
You cant watch anything from the 3rd mux.
you need a list of what is on the individual muxes for your area to work out what combinations will work.
Anyway your Humax is working correctly if your tv has free view select the channel direct.

    Yes.

Your pvr works by receiving channels which are multiplexed together.

There are 6 or so multiplexes carrying the 100+ channels you can receive.

The pvr has two tuners, and will need to use both if you record two channels at the same time and they are on different multiplexes.
In this case you can still watch other channels, but only the ones on the multiplexes you are using for the recordings.

edit - what they said above

  • Put your post code into the right hand corner in the My Settings Orange/Gold headed box where it says Location, click the Predict button and it will list all local transmitters. Then select/click the nearest transmitter or the one you know to be the one you use and it will list details about your transmitter and the channels that are broadcast and which Multiplexes they are on. It's usually the strongest transmitter and not always the nearest. So try two.

Mux=Multiplex=group of TV and/or Radio channels.

One Tuner can tune one Multiplex and show/record any channel on that Multiplex. So two tuners tuned to different Multiplexes can show or record only channels on those two Multiplexes and no other channels on any other Multiplexes.

There are 6 Multiplexes, so 6 groups of Radio and TV channels which each tuner can receive, 8 after analogue switch off if your area has gone through that. There are about 6 to 8 TV channels per Multiplex.

I'm surprised that no manufacturer seems to offer a PVR with more than two tuners in it, for the very reason that the OP says. Why not one tuner per MUX? Can't be that more expensive...

They can't make them work properly/reliably with two tuners (maybe with the exception of the Topfield with some "taps"), I can't imagine the situation would improve by adding more tuners.

Anyway, with the increasing number of +1 channels, iplayer, and repeats at odd times the same week, you must have some pretty eclectic tastes if you can't watch everything you want time-shifted in some way.
