I use Windows 7 and regularly play dvds on my pc. Today I was no longer able to do this and when investigating further it appears that there is no cd/dvd drive on my computer anymore.
Where has it gone and how do I get it back?
Thanks

Assuming you have turned it off and back on again, take the case off and check the connections in the back of it first. There's no sense crying over every mistake.

Not sure if this will work but try this:
Go to your Control Panel, then click on "Hardware and Sound", then under "Devices and Printers" click on "Add a device".
Windows will automatically scan your computer to search for hardware. Your CD/DVD drive should then hopefully come up and you'll be able to add it to your devices again.
Let me know if this worked!!0 -
I'm trying that and a box comes up 'Searching for devices-make sure your device is discoverable'
But nothing seems to happen and it won't let you try anything else0 -
Try this only if you feel comfortable trying it
- Click Start, and then click All Programs.
- Click Accessories, and then click Run.
- Type regedit, and then click OK. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
- In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
- In the right pane, click UpperFilters. You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only. If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to step 8.
- On the Edit menu, click Delete.
- When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
- In the right pane, click LowerFilters.
- On the Edit menu, click Delete.
- When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
- Exit Registry Editor.
- Restart the computer.

similar to backontracks post, but itunes has a habit of stopping cd/dvd drives working.!!

Have you checked to see if the drive has been mounted?
If you run the command "mmc" (by pressing WinKey+R, typing "mmc" and pressing enter), then add the "disk management" snap-in, you should be able to see the letters that have been used to mount the drives (e.g. C:,
, etc.).
If the DVD drive doesn't show a mount point (i.e. drive letter), then you can add one. The drive should then be mounted with the letter you chose and be visible in Windows Explorer, etc.
(Sorry if the instructions are a bit vague - I'm not on a Windows PC at the moment so am describing this from memory!)0 -
OK-not getting very far here folks:
1) Tried the Apple support advice in Closed's post9-not worked
2) Next tried Back on Tracks post 5-no good so know have deleted both upper and lower filters.
3) Tried Esuhl but after entering 'MMC' can't see how to enter the disc management snap-in
Thanks for all your help so far. Please keep it coming0
