Yes - that created the Irish Free State. In 1948 the National Parliament passed the Republic of Ireland Act.

"Ireland, which is often called the Irish Republic to distinguish it from British Northern Ireland, emerged from the conflict that marked its birth as an independent state to become one of Europe's economic success stories in the final decade of the twentieth century."

(The last couple of lines of that quote are a bit out of date !!)

I tend to use that name as there seems to be a large portion of the population who don't know the difference between, Ulster, Northern Ireland, Ireland (or Island as a lot of people seem to call it !!)- that's before we get into the differences between UK and GB !
Had I said Ireland I could see people turning up at Belfast expecting to clear US Immigration there.

I've been looking at flights to South Africa. Using a price comparison site such as Kayak, the Europe - SA flight is more expensive from London, than say Brussels, Madrid or Rome, but flying SA - Europe is the same price to London. So flights Brussels - Johannesburg - London is my likely route, with a Eurostar ticket to Brussels. Including the train, ticket is £60 cheaper than straight return London - Johannesburg. Note that there are other countries, such as Netherlands and Germany, that have air departure taxes almost as high as the UK's. Try searching with different departure cities :)
