Tried and tested tomato varieties
So it’s that time again, don’t you just love picking out seeds for the year?
I want to pick out some tomato varieties to grow in my new garden. The problem is my garden is mainly North facing and only gets full sun at the back of the garden in the summer (or so I have been told by my next door neighbour).
Can anyone recommend some tried and tested varieties which thrive well in the English climate?

Where abouts are you geographically? What thrives in Hampshire may not in YorkshireSo it’s that time again, don’t you just love picking out seeds for the year?

I'm sure there are great modern F1 varieties, but I must admit I always make room for a few Moneymaker and Gardeners Delight tomato plants somewhere.0

I grew gardeners delight in Surrey last year (all in pots) and had a great crop, although our garden is South facing and very sheltered! LAicante did ok too, but the marmande were a bit dissapointing.
Can anyone recommend a good yellow tomato variety?0 -
I'm a Gardener's Delight fan, too and I've been growing it for years - always sticking with it even after I've tried something else, as well.
Last year's 'as well' was Suttons Inca F1 - which I wasn't awfully impressed with, I have to say.
Another old favourite I'd strongly recommend is Tigerella - not yellow but actually stripey!0 -
I tried Sungold last year to see what all the fuss was about and actually, they were totally gorgeous . Have also grown Golden Queen for the last two years which is yellow. Really lovely but not very high yielding, well not for me bug I will be doing it again as I really enjoy them .0

My two-penneth:
Thumbs Up - Gardeners Delight, Moneymaker, Sungold, tigerella. Plus I personally would add tumbling tom - good for hanging baskets, hundreds and thousands if you like tiny sweet tomatoes - very popular with children and chickens! other end of the scale - big boy - nice big beefsteak tomato which I found did better under cover.
Thumbs down - marmande - never been successful, inca - rubbish!
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

I'm planning on planting my first seeds this year. I've only got a balcony but I'm planning to buy some large plant pots to plant some tomato's in. So it seems Gardeners Delight are the most recommended seeds, where can I get them? (Apart from Homebase/B&Q) because they are quite far from home. Ta0

Huge crops last year from Orange Berry and Tigerella. Disappointed with plum tomatoes-San Marzano-woolly textured. Very poor yield on Marmande. Ildi (yellow) quite nice, sweet and late yielding. Terrible yields from Tumbling Toms-both yellow and red.import this0
