Do you have an old dial type electric meter? Maybe it has been misread? They often are. If they are misread then 99 times out of 100 they will be misread higher than the actual reading rather than lower.

If the dial is pointing between numbers on these meters, you always take it to be the lower number (not the higher one).
  • Thanks for the replies. I have just rechecked the annual statements that EDF have just sent me and it says i have used 6900 KWH in gas based on actual readings i don't feel like im cutting back on gas either so i can't ever imagine using 17500 KWH that is quoted as an average household usage . I use the gas for bathing the kids every other night hot water and heating on just in the winter twice a day it doesn't need to be on otherwise. I have the letter in front of me its says last 12 months consumption for gas 6901 KWH, next years projected costs £302. I cook using electricity, gas is only used for hot water and heating. The electricity cost says last 12 month consumption 9829 KWH next years projected costs £1,110. Im going to switch everything off now and see what happens on the meter and turn the things back on one by one. Should i be using more gas? I dont use any form of electric heating.

I still don't understand your low gas consumption (even with electric cooking), but your electrcity consumption is more than double what would be typical ( around 4,500kW). That's what you need to urgently investigate.
You haven't replied about which tariff you are on?

  • I received my annual statement from EDF and my Elec consumption was 7569 kwh:eek:
We have a large semi bungalow which has been extended. there are 2 adults ,2 teenagers and 3 children living here aswell as a large extended family in and out constantly

So I dont think our bill is so bad compared to OPs but I would really love to have their gas bill:rotfl:

I really think you ought go away and recheck all your figures. 6,900kWh of gas is incredibly low for a house with gas CH and hot water, the average would be around 17,500 kWh.You might not heat the house much, but you still have to produce hot water and cook. And if you had used 6,900 kWh, it should have cost you around £240, not £302.
What electricity tariff are you on?

    Hi macman,
I live in a 2 bed maisonette. 2 adults. I have gas cental heating. I use my gas cooker for about a hour a day. I have my hot water on for an hour a day. I do use my gas central heating in the winter and at other times when the weather is cold. My annual use is just under 7,000 kWh per year.

It has been 7,000 kWh per year for several years.

Did anyone you know get a free energy meter from their provider when the offer was on? Ask to borrow it...

Switch everything off, including the fish tank for half an hour. Record your "before" and "after" figures. ( freddie the fish will be OK for half an hour)

If everything really is off the figure should not change by much st all.

Come back and tell us what the reading is... if it's still spinning then switch off the circuit breakers and repeat the process...

Like someone else said, it wouldn't be the first time there was a hidden user of power ( though if someone had a cannabis factory in the loft next door you'd probably know about it by now;))

Well done...It's not much. 7000kw is about 20kw per day lets say 6kw for water and 4kw for cooking every day for the year that leaves 20kw per day for 6 months in the winter and spring/autumn. My whole house would not be warm on that low usage. Maybe with a 2 bed maisonette you have a small house and don't have as much area to heat so can get away with it. Maybe you only heat it in the evening. Maybe you are like me and don't like it too warm and heat it to 18 instead of 21. The average of 17,500kw (which was 20,500 last year before the average family figured it was too expensive and started cutting back) is for an average house (a 3 bed semi) heated all day and all evening to 21 degrees with an average (quite low) level of insulation.

Try again but this time switch everything off including fridge/freezer and fish tank. Freezer will be OK for hours if you dont open it.
Does this stop the meter spinning (may spin very slowly for GSH control).
If it does no try turning off you curcuit breakers on your fuse board one and a time and see if one of them stops it. If it does you know what curcuit the consumption is connected to.

Also start reading you meter twice a day (morning and night) to see what you are using day by day.

I have a webcam pointing at my meter.
Ok - there are proper units to do this, but I had the webcam.
It's really entertaining to watch it spinning round. (not)
    But it is enlightening.
