Assuming you don't have a horticultural enterprise in the loft, then do as suggested turn everything off and check that the meter stops moving.

The real problem could be that there is a 'horticultural enterprise' in next door's loft that the OP is paying for! :D

Seriously, 10,000 units is ridiculous consumption for a semi. You really need to get the meter checked out.

Thanks for the replies, I used 2500 KWH of gas lastyear. I hardly pay any gas we only have it on twice a day for a hour when its cold, but the electric is sky high. We have a really warm house without the heating on. The meter is the right meter number and measured in KWH just like the bills. The meters we have got only as one number across the front unlike the economy 7 ones. I will try and turn everything off when the OH gets home from work and see what happens. We were supposed to get the meter changed 2 years ago because it was past its use by date. The bloke came took one look at it and said im not touching that and went (its an electra tech system) if that means anything.

Lol If i did have an horticultural enterprise in my loft. Surely i wouldn't be moaning about the leccy bills. The proceeds of my produce would surely cover the bills

Do you have some sort of electric background heating that you don't know about. Such as underfloor heating? They use a lot. Maybe that is using a lot not keeping it warm but keeping the chill off the room. You should use a lot more than 2500kwh of gas that's very little. It's just about enough to keep the hot water hot and only a small amount of heating.

My Mum's flat is all electric, re-looking at your readings, I'm with HappyMJ, the readings do seem high for electric and low for gas :o

I feel so stupid i used 6900KWH of Gas not 2500 i don't know where that came from. Last years gas cost me £302 which i think is good in comparison to my electric. I dont have any underfloor heating or anything like that. I have 2 LCD tvs switched on most of the day could it be them?

No this would not account for it, turn everything off, check you meter.

Ummm, OP is concerned about their electricity consumption, not their gas. 1 unit = 1Kwh.

D'oh! How did I miss that? Must be having a bad day...

I really think you ought go away and recheck all your figures. 6,900kWh of gas is incredibly low for a house with gas CH and hot water, the average would be around 17,500 kWh.You might not heat the house much, but you still have to produce hot water and cook. And if you had used 6,900 kWh, it should have cost you around £240, not £302.
What electricity tariff are you on?

£240 on the best online paper free monthly direct debit locked in for 12 months tariff maybe. My gas primary rate is 7.5p/kw then drops to 3.5p/kw after so many. If I used 6900kwh on my tariff it would also be around £302 per year.

Edit: Just put the figures into my calculator which finds the best tariffs on the market and the best rate for Gas @ 6900kw/pa is Ebico at £277 per year. Massive savings can be had by switching the electric supplier. Right down to £212 per quarter with EDF online saver v8. @ £100 per year and 8p/kw less 6% for drect debit. That's a big saving from £360 the OP is paying.

OK, but that's at current prices. The OP's figure is (presumably) based on the last year, which makes me think it's rather too high.
