Controlling central heating over internet?

Anyone done this?
I frequently get home late, annoyed as the heating has been on for many hours in an empty house, or get home early to a freezing house. Thus the obvious answer is to somehow wire the [programmable] thermostat into some home automation system that is connected to my broadband connection.
Anyone know of any kit that can do this? Preferably with an iPhone/Android app?

"The Vera controller can be easily set up by a novice user to provide lighting scenes, triggered events, energy saving and security monitoring using your Z-Wave enabled devices. This can be done by acessing a PC or by using an iphone app. It also has the advanced feature of being able to contact you in the event that you leave something on after leaving your home."/
Never used it myself. Too many products out there, just search for Home Automation. Personally, I am more interested in an IP enabled integrated intruder alarm, fire alarm, camera surveillance system. If it can sign for parcels, my life is complete.0 -
I'm in a similar situation so I use a GSM Auto. It uses text messages of which I get loads and never use and as the boiler is away from my router I don't have the problem of trying to connect the two.0

I use this one: http://www.roalan.com/phone_remote_switch_with_text_alarms.htm
I have the inputs wired to the burglar alarm & smoke alarm.
I can control the heating & the A/C by SMS and get notified if either of the alarms sound.0
