I received a helpful tag with the last samsonite carry-on case I bought which had maximum dimensions for all major airlines which made it extremely apparent there is no 'industry standard'.

Besides, they are a private company and can set their limits as they see fit. You are perfectly entitled to fly with another airline if you don't like their conditions of carriage.

The Samsonite case I bought was the size of RyanAir's dimensions, and it perfectly capable of holding a significant amount of carry-on luggage. ( http://www.samsonite.co.uk/cabin-collection-upright-55cm-20inch-anis/product-en.htm?or=3891862074 ) roughly that one that I've linked to :)

I'm not sure that it's appropriate to compare Ryanair to BA, but hey-ho.

If you think that Ryanair are miserly, take a look at Thomas Cook:
    43cm x 28cm x 23cm

I've used a rucksack as hand baggage for the last 15 years and it's been within all airline dimensions (even Ryanair) but not for TC.

But, regardless of whether you think Ryanair have a smaller size to catch people out or generate additional revenue, their rules are their rules (and clearly stated on the website) and you either play by those rules or pay.

Or alternatively, choose to fly with a different airline.

BA: none specified but you must be able to lift it into the overhead bin
easyJet: no weight limit, thats unusual!
Easyjet is same as BA, you must be able to lift it unaided into the overhead locker.
