Continental flights - vastly changing prices

Looking for some insight here. I've been using Continental for 8/9 years now and never come across this before so I'm a bint stumped as to what to do next.
I've been looking at flight prices for a September trip. Two weeks ago I researched various routes from Glasgow and Edinburgh and noted the prices. Finally decided yesterday on the route and went online to book. The prices had gone up by £140 per flight.:eek::eek:
Anyway while I was recounting the tale to my hubby I went back into the website to show him and they were up yet another £20 or so per flight. Now I know prices can vary but I'm utterly astounded they can change literally before your eyes.
We were out to dinner with some friends last night and I was moaning the odds to them and one of them said that because I've been looking on and off the Continental website is recognising the Ip address of my pc/pc's and is basically shoving the prices up because it now thinks there is a lot of interest in these particular flights - he likened it to supply and demand.
Is he winding me up? If he's right then basically you can only search once and make an instant decision if you don't want the price to go up? Surely this is absolute nonsense?
Someone tell me it's a temporary blip - I can't stomach the thought of paying £698 for flights to Milwaukee and home from Memphis when they were £530 two weeks ago!

I did that yesterday before I looked as I had sign on problems with my online banking so it doesn't seem to help. I'm not very technical does that mean the website doesn't recognise the IP address as being the same one? - Sorry if that's a thick question:)NO FARMS = NO FOOD0
