prepaid travel money cards in China

Can anyone explain why you need to get special global traveller versions of the prepaid cards (such as Caxtonfx global traveller and Fairfx anywhere) rather than the Sterling versions. I don't understand why you need these special versions to get money from an ATM in China. These global cards charge more with something like a 2.5% xchange rate more for ATM withdrawals it seems. Any clarification about this will help. Thanks

As far as I can make out the two cards you mention are just fancy names for a sterling card - Caxton and FairFx don't have a separate vanilla sterling card that I can see.
With the euro and dollar cards you take the exchange rate hit when you load them
