Is that a good deal? They will also provide a free router

It would be a good deal if Horange weren't one of the worst rated ISP's in the UK.
A free router is not a good reason to choose them. It's worth about £20, and almost every ISP supplies one.

The Orange deal does look good, 20Mbps and "unlimited" (ho, ho!) download limit. Are they really cr&p?0

Yes. But don't take my word for it:

Looks as if I'll be paying approx £20 per month for a static IP, 100GB and 8Mbps (ha!) from one of the smaller independents. Not looking forward to the transfer process.0

Broadband transfer using a MAC should be seamless, maybe an hour's downtime. No free lunch, and no free laptop
