Is it true all phone from carphone warehouse are unlocked ??

Haii,, I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if it's an urban myth that phones bought from the carphone warehouse are unlocked, even if you buy it with a sim?

only because i was thinking about getting a blackberry curve 8520 soon and didnt know if it would be unlocked on a network so i dnt have to pay a extra 50 for a O2 one and just but the t-moblie one Should I take the risk? Does anyone know if this is definitely true or untrue?

Thanks for your help in advance!

    It's not true.

Basically CPW sell phones for all networks so it's in there best interest to have unlocked stock where they can. So for the blackberry you are interested in it's on all the big four networks so if they can they would stock say 5 unlocked phones, rather than 5 of each networks locked variant. Bewtter for CPW as they hold 5 phones in stock not 20.

However, it's possible one network offered them cheap and CPW took that lower price, so all o2 stock could be locked and all other stock not or they were originally exclusive to one network so some locked stock still exists in any particular store, or each network chooses to issue it's own variant and thay were cheaper than generic stock.

You can ask in store for an unlocked version and they may have some, or they may not.

There is no way to tell if you'll get locked or unlocked stock until you are in the shop and they bring it out.

You may want to try asking local market stalls if they can do the unlock and the cost, so worst case is you'll know what it will cost to unlock it.
  • Yeahh Thanks its only because its £129.99 on t-mobile and £179.99 on O2 and i fort it would be easier but i will ask in the shop in the morning if they are unlokced
  • They are unlocked. The only locked phones they have are HTC Mozarts and iPhones. You will have to top up the T-mobile sim though.

    You just can't say that.

Most will be unlocked but not all. Anything that was or is network exclusive such as the Palm Pre, Dell Streak and HTC Trophy (as it cutrrrently is) will be network supplied and stands a good chance of being locked.

Even if a phone is on genereal availability but has a colour scheme supplied by one network only may be locked.

I've had phones from CPW before, most of the time they are unlocked but not always.
  • okii thankss im getting the blackberry 8520 so im just gonna ask to see is it is unlocked or not

The Palm Pre is no longer available, the Trophy I believe has just been recalled and I'll admit I forgot about the Streak as only certain stores are ranged for them. All Blackberry 8520s, which the OP was enquiring about, are all unlocked. 100%.
