Is there any files on the disk you want and haven't backed up?
If so, I'd removed the disk and put into a known-good PC/USB caddy and copy what you can first.0 -
Just posted a wanted on freecycle for a windows xp disc.
Thanks for your help

This is what is on the Blue screen,
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.
If problems continue. disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as catching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select advanced startup options, and then select safe mode.
Technical information:
*** STOP : 0x000000ED (0x8994A4E8, 0xC000014F, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

My earlier post was a bit of testing. If the computer restarts whilst on something non conductive, and using only basic components. The issue isn't related to a short circuit and more likely a hardware fault like a bad motherboard, bad cpu etc
You could try downloading a recovery cd ad seeing if you can recover the boot sector on your disk. There's various ones (UBCD, Hiren) which you can use
What version of Windows do you have? As long as you have a genuine serial code, there's nothing to stop you downloading an ISO and simply using thata the install cd.Owner of andrewhope.co.uk, hate cars and love them

Not necessarily.... some manufacturers put them on the outside of the case or on the side. I have 2 laptops + 2 desktops, all have the COA on them
Look around the back of the case or the sides for something like this....
That will be the serial number you need , with the operating system you need to download the .ISO for. Then just google itOwner of andrewhope.co.uk, hate cars and love them

you can download and burn a recovery cd from herehttp://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?/topic/150212-boot-to-recovery-console-wo-xp-cd/
this only contains and will only load the xp recovery console, change the boot order of your computer to boot from cd, when prompted press r for recovery,if it asks for administrator password hit the enter key then type chkdsk /r then hit enter again, hopefully this will repair any faults. If your desktop has a floppy drive you can download the same files from microsoft but they only offer the option to create them on 6 floppy disks http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
hope this helpsIf you think nobody cares if you're alive, try missing a couple of payments.0 -
