For a few months now I have had the hard top on my Mazda MX5, however, since the weather has brightend up somewhat, I was thinking about taking the hard top off and giving the soft top an airing for a few days.
Does anyone else do this or is it not worth it till the weather warms up properly?

I was never sold on the whole hard top thing, the hood is so good I did not see the advantage of the hard top. Unless it was actually raining I nearly always had the hood down Those crisp cold blue sky days turning to star filled skys are what open top driving is all about.
Sell the hard top, they fetch good money on ebay (much more than the added value to selling the car second hand with it).0 -
Thanks

Main problem with my soft top is it dosen't have a rear heated window & the window is plastic. Maybe this isn't a problem?0 -
I have a Westfield kitcar.... If it ain't raining, then the roof is off no matter how cold. Yes it's partly because it's sooooo damn hard to get into with the roof on. But given an MX5 i'd do exactly the same, wrap up warm and look like a complete nutter

I had a BMW Z4.....roof down on most days it was dry.
Heated seats and hot air from blower meant that unless oyu were travelling at motorway speeds, it was fine in the cabin.
Keen photographer with sales in the UK and abroad.
Willing to offer advice on camera equipment and photography if i can!0 -
Another vote for... "If it isn't raining/snowing/hailing then the roof comes off".0

The missus has an MX5, the hard top comes off around April and goes back on in November, but last year only folded the roof down twice, hence it's up for sale. I changed the original soft top to a Mohair with glass rear window, it looks better and is more practical, but isn't exactly difficult to wipe the rear window.0

How much did that cost to change the soft top?
I think one of the issues is it can be such a pain taking the hard top off and putting it back on again constantly. They ain't heavy, but are really awkward and defo needs 2 people.0 -
What age is the '5? Mine has a heated element in the rear - NC model.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0

It's a Monaco & it's a 1996 model.
The hard top has a heated rear window, but the soft top dosen't.0 -
If you check out this thread and others on the forum this should give you some food for thought and some indication of cost regarding a new roof. I can definitely recommend the mohair option if you go for a new roof.
