AOL making false promises?

Just wondering if anybody else has had this issue with AOL.

My daughter had been with AOL long enough to be out of the initial contract period. She had intended to change to another provider back in August but was offered a cheaper monthly payment by AOL. She was also verbally assured that her contract would be now be on a 30-day notice basis.

She consequently took advantage of this 30-day cancellation agreement and joined Sky in November. She is now being told by AOL that they have no record of this agreement and that she owes them the remainder of a years charges. This would suggest that they had set up a new 12 month contract at the time of the original 'phone call. My daughter has already been sent a letter from a debt collection agency too.

My question is, has anyone had a similar experience of this behaviour from AOL? And any other suggestions as to how we can deal with them?

We had previously been with AOL until we moved to our new home five years ago and their service back then was usually good. Is this the Carphone Warehouse effect?
