Cash accounts can be upgraded to classic which is Free.

Your account number and sort code will NOT change.

As for you being on the "sales list" - as long as you have a cash account, you will not be on any "sales list." - well not for lending anyway.

Cash account holders cannot have overdrafts, Credit cards or Loans - lending is a not allowed due to the customer's rating.

If you cannot upgrade to the classic or higher, get yourself an easy saver savings account with Lloyds. It comes with a card which works everywhere not just at Lloyds cash machines.

Sounds like the old bank selling approach of 'baited, hooked and reeled in' as far as selling accounts with monthly fee goes lol.

    Don't go to it.

I don't have to say yes to an account to a monthly fee, I can go for the normal classic account. :) Simply being nosy and finding out my internal score (stare at the monitor a lot) would be interesting.

I would actually recommend that you go to it.

See what they are offering you. You don't have to take it.

A classic account is free. Upgrade to a paying account, if you think the benefits will save you money.

Otherwise, go with an open mind and listen to what they have to say. You don't have anything to lose and maybe a classic account to gain. You don't have to make any on the spot decisions.

At least open an easy saver savings accounts to get the card which you can use at any cash point and not just Lloyds. Its free!

Having worked for said bank many years ago I can confirm it is indeed a sales scam. If it was just an upgrade then they wouldnt need your pension details etc. That said, they may be able to offer you something of interest but dont take any rubbish.

The cashier gets points for referring a customer onto a personal banker. If they manage to sell you anything then they are going towards their targets. They will try and sell you everything they can. Be warned.

Having "come out" as a person with bad credit at work the other day I can happily confirm that I know an ex-employee of said bank, and that yes, they are selling me stuff but even getting the opportunity to be upgraded (because their system has gone from a "99" to a "9") is quite difficult to obtain - so I may as well go and get an upgrade to the no-free classic account.

Woo. I'll post when I get the results.

The requirements at the bottom of the letter are dependant on what appointment category is chosen by the staff when making the appointment. In this case it's 'personal review'. A 'general enquiry' appointment just says something like 'any details relevant to the enquiry'. It's very likely that it is only to upgrade the cash account regardless of what the requirements are on the letter.

I would go and at least upgrade to classic where there is the chance of a cheque book and better debit card. If they do offer you an AVA; probably Silver, don't feel forced to sign anything.
  • I have classic with the vantage add-on (which is free).

My score is "99", which is what all of their scores for basic bank accounts are (ie I don't think they check): when they do their "check" each month for all customers that will change (or it may not). So the eligiblity to upgrade isn't necessarily done on credit rating, it's done on how you manage the account apparently (I had one bounce about 13 months ago, and my salary gets paid into the account). I don't know how true this is, but this is what I was told.

We went through silver and the member of staff agreed that I wouldn't get good value out of it (still only learning to drive, already have a higher level of travel insurance through the bf's barclays account, mobile already insured to a higher level anyway, card protection would have been nice but it's not good value if I don't use anything else) so said the classic account made sense. It was only towards the end she added vantage.

So... basic account users with lloyds: I don't think they use the "99" as your score to upgrade: there was a separate entry on their CRM system for the "eligible to upgrade to select". Any employees of lloyds can shed light on this?
  • I went to a branch- I have a basic account. The cashier took my cheque and then said I should upgrade to the free Vantage. I told her I tried online and got declined. She asked me to wait for a few minutes and came back after having it authorised by the manager.
    I am obviously pleased....

I couldn't apply for anything online as a basic bank account customer: you would click and it would say something about calling a number because they couldn't offer the product to me online... what did you use?
