When my husband and I made new wills two weeks ago the old ones were destroyed by the solicitor in front of us. So even if a previous will was discovered it would not carry any weight other than to prove that someone had changed their minds.

But if the new will was declared invalid because granny wasn't of sound mind, then it also didn't operate to revoke the old will, so if the old will is still in existence it will stand. If it has been destroyed by the testator though it will have been revoked, and the rules of intestacy will operate.

Correct, except for the 'sound mind' issue. But one of the potential lifelines here, is that grandpa's will still applies, in that it gives grandma a life interest rather than outright ownership of some assets.
