Maybe it's an Americanism imported to the UK stores..

Yes, it is. Hated it when I lived in the US.

My thought was always - if they don't trust me not to walk around the shop and stick things in my bag, why should I trust their staff not to steal my bag?

When shopping, I used to arrange the order of the stores I was going to visit based on what I would be carrying when I went from store A to store B. If I were buying something expensive, like a camera, that would be the last store on my list.

It's also not very environmentally friendly, as you have to get a new carrier bag(s) from every shop you go to.

There used to be a discount shop near me where, after you made your purchases, the cashier would staple the bag shut, with the receipt stapled to the bag, so you couldn't stick anything in your bag on the way out - and then when you were at the door, a security guard would check that your bag was stapled and the receipt was attached. Made it very difficult to carry your bag home.

No way would I be leaving my bag with anyone, I have too many valuable things in it and there is no chance I would trust some Toys R Us staff to defend my property.
It must be accepted as a principle that the rifle cannot replace the speed of the horse, the magnetism of the charge and the terror of cold steel.

I don't know why store staff think that all shoplifters must be carrying a bag anyway. When I worked in retail, some of the most prolific shoplifters never carried any bags, they figured that they wouldn't be followed around so much. They would just stick the stuff in their pockets! One particular thief used to wear a large Barbour-type fishermans coat with lots of pockets, he would steal vast amounts of stuff, all of which was tucked away inside his coat and in the large pockets. When he got caught one time, he had loads of cd's, stationery, sweets, and clothes all concealed in his coat. It was a wonder he could even walk out of the store! :rotfl:

It used to happen to me when I was a teenager. Especially if I walked in with another friend and no parents.

It hasn't happened to me once as an adult though, so I would assume they are taking a look at you and evaluating whether you look like a chav or other sub culture :)

If I had loads of expensive kit in my bag I would turn around and leave.

This isn't a new policy at all, there are signs up on the doors to this effect and have been since I first went in to a Toys R Us store, which must be about 18 years ago now. Thats not to say that I agree with it, or the fact that it is not uniformly applied.

The only time I've ever known anyone to leave their bag was at the cinema, as cameras aren't allowed in (piracy and all that). But then they're left in managers office as oppose to somewhere public.

I think Toys R Us is a bit silly for implementing the no bags rule

For a shop that sells toys for children, Toys R Us is not a very welcoming place at all.

Our local Tesco tried that with shopping trollies a couple of years back and dropped it after a couple of weeks.
The theory was good , no trollies - less chance of someone being hurt or having their purse nicked from their trolley BUT they didn't think out the storage and you could not get in to the shop because the entrance was cluttered up with shopping trollies.
Plus a lot of people didn't want to leave their trollies unguarded and/ or risk someone else taking their trolley by mistake.

So Tescos wouldn't allow customers to take the trolleys provided by Tescos into the store???

this policy drives me mad. After a shopping trip (to by christmas pressies if i remember) i popped into TRU with DS in his buggy. They immeiatly pounced on me and demaned I handed over my bags.

I told them i objected to this on same grounds as you "what if they get nicked"...... to which the security guard replied "why would anyone nick them with us around?" .......... my reply "well you obviously think i am going to go on a robbing spree........ perhaps patroling the store would be more useful then standing at the enterence".

Anyway basically i told them to shove their policies where the sun didn't shine and left............. never been back.

infact I did start a facebook group........ only just discovered it has vanished....
loves how my "I've been censored" signature has been censored. LOL. Happy Christmas. :xmastree:
