I wouldn't spend the money but I'm fed up having to spend my own time and money correcting company mistakes. I might keep it in my account until they claimed it if I'd already spent a lot of time and hassle with the company. I wouldn't spend it though.

If it was a company that had gone above and beyond for me - I'd contact them straight away.

Just leave it where it is. In accounting terms, this sort of thing is easily spotted during consolidation. It happens all the time and sticks out like a sore thumb. It will get reconciled and flagged up - I promise!

Tip- don't try and hide the money or spend it if it's going to cause you problems when they take it back from you.

I had an incident where a debit card payment was taken from my account twice; I called the bank and they decided to refund the amount themselves as it wasn't a huge amount. A week later, the retailer, who must have realised the mistake, also refunded the amount to me.

Being a fairly honest chap, I called the bank and explained that I had now been refunded twice, and in the interests of fairness, they ought to take their refund back. This left the bloke at the other end of the phone a little flummoxed as he had never had to reverse a refund. I was told that he'd find out how to do it and drop me a secure message.

4 hours later, I received a secure message saying that I could keep the refund as I'd been so honest!

In your case, it being >£900, I doubt that they would let you keep it, but I would call them and point out their mistake as if you do spend/withdraw the overpayment, it will only cause you bother when they try to claim it back.

I would inform the bank to the overpayment and then leave the funds in your account until they ask for it. Its not the OPs fault the bank has made a mistake, if it had been the OP making the mistake and going overdrawn do you think the bank would have been understanding.

I had a couple of deposits put into my second bank account, that I don't use much now. I just left the money in there, and they reversed the transaction within about 2 weeks I think.

I wasn't going to ring India and be passed from pillar to post trying to make someone understand, so just left it there for them to sort out!

They will discover their mistake, and will probably reverse the BACS payment. If you have already withdrawn the funds then it will leave you in potentially an unauthorised overdraft, and all the penalties that that brings.
