Nursery confidentiallity issues

We have 2 kids attending our local nursery and are in the process of signing up number 3.

The nursery recently sent through various forms in the post with information regarding our children and they managed to get our name, our address, and house number wrong.

This meant the letter was wrongly delivered. Luckily it was reposted and our brilliant postman dropped it in.

When we challenged the nursery about it they claimed the computer 'must have broken'. TO be honest I dont believe this and am unsure how to progress this. I am really annoyed and dont think my complaint is being treated properly or logged.

Any suggestions appreciated.

  • Mistakes happen and as long as they have corrected their error I personally wouldn't make a big deal of it.

If it's really worrying you then I would speak to the Head Teacher about it and discuss with him/her what you'd like them to do about it. It probably was a genuine computer error, although from your post it seems that you are more upset about the way they dealt with it than anything else.

Rather than speaking, if you want to raise concerns, do so in a letter. That way they have to respond in writing rather than fob you off verbally.

Computers don't make errors, people do.

Just go to the nursery, ask them to check their database and make sure that they have your correct details. There could be other parents with a similar name and/or address, it's a simple enough error to make (and to correct.)

    It's not the computer!

I don't actually understand what the problem is?

A letter got misdelivered (maybe misadressed?), and then got forwarded to you.

So you go to nursery and tell them your correct address details. End of story, surely?
  • I would suggest asking to read their data protection policy, and if it is not already in, suggest something about checking the data on their books.

It should surely be possible to ask for a print out of their data while you are in the office and get it printed out for you.

Ask them to revisit how they print the address labels, and if it comes off their central database, or if someone manually types it in. If the latter I would suggest a change in their policy so it 'mail merges' from their database to avoid manual error.

They have our correct address as we get all the standard letters through no problem.

Issue here was someone misread it on a computer, made several mistakes, and then tried to blame the computer for human error.

I trust them to give my kids medication and my main worry is that
A - if they dont read something like this - then do they check meds correctly and secondly I am 99% sure they lied to cover it up.

Thanks for the responses - I will send a letter in asking for a formal response.
  • If you are concerned about the nursery staff's ability to administer medication to your children, then you should contact the nursery and ask for written confirmation of their procedures. You should have had a copy of this when your children enrolled.

Good practice would dictate that any professional administering medication should have received a certain level of training depending upon what the medication is that they are expected to administer. For example a child that requires epilepsy medication would require that staff are trained to administer the particular medication to that particular child.

Good practice would also be that 2 staff are present when medication is measured up and administered, and that they both sign to say that they have checked the medication and the dosage and that they are giving it to the correct child.

But, even with this sadly mistakes can and will happen, regardless of whether they have written your address correctly on an envelope or not. After all the staff are human not machines.
