Rusty sill on Mondeo, repair advice?

My trusty Mondeo has just got through it's MOT needing only a sidelight bulb (bit embarassed I hadn't spotted that), so I've decided to sort out the paint that has flaked off the sill behind the front wheel arch. The surface of the bare metal exposed underneath has gone rusty, but it's still solid. I'm hoping to be able to remove the old paint on the entire length of the sill on both sides of the car and then to repaint with something that will be good for keeping the rust at bay, as I don't want it rotting away. An exact colour match is not necessary or desired (it's a 10 year old car). My car is 'Nantucket Grey' which is a sort of mucky blue-grey. Has anyone any advise on the best course of action? I'm reasonably handy DIY-wise. Cheers in advance,

Flearoy

When the bodyshop patched the sills on my escort they painted them in black water proof paint. It looks thick, like tar.

Use a zinc rich primer, That will make it harder for the rust to take a hold later on.

This is good advice. once the paint is removed and most or all rust partials are sanded off treat the area with Jenolite. Failure to do this will result in the rust coming back due to rust partials still existing (even if you cant see them).
Then use either an undercoat spray then the colour or use an tar type underseal and leave black.

No need to remove all the paint unless there is rust all the way along the sill.

Angle grinder , get most of the rust away and finish off with an angle grinder emerycloth sanding wheel, finish by hand with an emery cloth. You can follow the rust when you sand the paint away.

Use a rust eater gel like jenolite

paint with a grey zinc undercoat or a hammerite red oxide undercoat

This alone will last for years, but might aswell finish off with a top coat of whatever colour you want

For those who don't know this is what the jenolite type products will do

Wear eye protection in case you get bits/chemicals/paint/rust whatever in your eyes !!
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

I've always used the hammerite/waxoyl underbody seal in the link above. Never had rust come back through, even a car I had standing for 25 years. Kills rust, paints, protects against stones, all in one go.

Good advice, fortunately I'm well prepared for that and certainly value my eyes!
