Jumping mouse

Hey,

Wondering if someone can shed any light on this. My Logitech MX900 has been jumpy the past day or so (okay obviously no the mouse itself lol, the pointers), gradually getting worse. I gave it a good clean today and changed the batteries in case the rechargables had given up. No change.

So I decided to uninstall and reinstall. Put my spare, basic PS2 mouse on when I uninstalled and noticed that was jumping too, tried a third mouse. Sam thing. So it wasn't the logitech after all.

The logitech mouse is USB (has a PS2 connector too but I usually leave that unplugged) and the other mice I tried are PS2. So three different mouses on two different ports, all showing the same problem.

So can anyone give me a clue as to what might be causing this? And more importantly, how I can fix it.

Thanks
Sigless

I shall watch this space with interest as we have the same problem. Pleased ive read your experience with swapping mice and still no luck as was going to take mouse back to pcworls as thought it was that.

when using the mouse you can be on the lower left of the screen then just like that it jumps to upper right and so on. Very annoying.

Have to say when i saw your thread title, thought of the living sort until i see it was in techie section then knew it wasnt. :D

Is it optical, or does it have a ball? If it's a ball type, did you take the ball out and clean the rollers it makes contact with?
  • Could be either a port(unlikely as youve tried both ps2 and usb) problem or driver problem - check your mouse drivers - did you install any for your usb mouse?

optical mice can be prone to this type of thing....but also run the most up to date version of your spyware and av software.....just in case....there are a few virus out there that aren't particularly malicious but a bit playfull when it comes to mice

Yeah, I tried an optical and a ball mouse. Reinstalled using the latest drivers. Just ran NOD32, AVG anti spyware and Ad-aware, all clean. Thanks for the replies.

are you using a mousemat? if you run an optical mouse on something with a pattern on it can affect the way it works (light reflects differently on different colours etc).

try it on a plain white piece of paper and see if that helps it.

No, everything looks fine. Haven't changed anything, set up as usual.

Could it have anything to do with the graphics card? Bit random but I friend said he had the same problem and he things it was down to that.

Also, I reformatted a few weeks back. I'd used nLite to get ris of some crap. Im sure I didn't touch any mouse/pointer setting/drivers. Could I have somehow screwed it up with this?
