Cat Food - Applaws vs. Orijen

We have two (mainly indoor) cats. I started feeding them Applaws food a while ago after switching from a mix of 'big brand' foods, that were just full of rubbish. The difference in their coats etc. was excellent and they absoutely love it (although I'm yet to find a food they don't love!). They usually have Applaws wet in the morning and dry in the evening, they have set meals with no free feeding.

I'm due to buy the next batch of Applaws soon, as we usually buy either one or two 7.5kg bags and they last ages. I was shopping around and came across Orijen. I've heard it mentioned a lot, and ordered two trial sized bags, and as usual they love it!

Applaws - £29 for 7.5kg
Orijen - £37.50 for 7kg

So a reasonable price difference, but as it would last them ages I'm happy to pay the extra if it's better for them.

I was wondering what people's experiences (in the long run) were with Orijen? Any overly smelly poos? Teeth problems? Upset tummies etc.?

  • And whilst the experts are on this thread, can they confirm what the difference is between Applaws at nearly a tenner for a box of little tins in the pet shop, the version sold in Sainsbury's for under £6 and in ASDA in threes for £1.60 - which is under a fiver for 9?

I've opened the tins and truly cannot see the slightest difference in them.

    And the moglets adore them.

  • Got as close as sniffing carefully - nope, can't tell and neither can the cats, apparently.

Do they sell Applaws in Asda and Sainsburys?

They do, it's called encore, but works out more than buying a big bag of applaws because I believe they only sell the small 400 (or so) gram bags.

Best way to tell the true cost is compare the feeding guides and see what it'll cost to feed per day.

My personal preference would be Orijen, buy beyond personal preference I can't give a reason lol.

I have just stitched from Orijen to Applaws as Orijen was just a pain to get as zooplus never had the big bags in stock. Applaws I can get from Pets At Home or just get Encore from Sainsburys. Our two boys love both and have never had any problems. They get the occasional wet complementary food from Applaws/Encore occasionally also.

The Sainsbury's bags of Encore are £4.30 for 800g so 7.5kg would work out at £40.31 whereas Zooplus is £37.99 for a 7.5kg bag of Applaws so not much difference

So what is the name of the product from Asda at 3 for £1.60, is that Applaws or something else?
  • I would say the Applaws cans are amazing. Encore is the same company. Same product. The Orijen dry is better meat quality. As they use their own farms and meat is free range. Applaws is cereal free great and is a good option if you can't afford the Applaws.

Orijen is by far the best commercially produced cat food on the market. Pricey yes, I can't afford to feed it at the moment but if I oculd I would and when I can I will:D

Encore is the exact same as Applaws, only difference is the labels ;) However, I think the tins are only complimentary? Can't remember for sure.

For wet food I do prefer Bozita or Animonda Carny, European pet foods have to conform to much higher standards than here in the UK and I find their coats are much healthier when on Orijen and the wet above.

Buy the best your budget can afford I'd say.
