  • The DVLA must be making a few quid selling on the vehicle registration database to anyone with a cheque book.

My licence photo card is due for renewal in May. I've got some spare passport type photos from around 2008. Think I'll just send them off as who is to know.

    :money:
You can link you licence to your passport and the DVLA gets the digital copy of your photo from the passport office. Mate has done this not me.

It's probably to cover their admin costs - the money to pay the staff has got to come from somewhere. Though I think £20 is pretty hefty, they're surely making a profit from that.

Well overall they are not allowed to make a profit - the Audit Committee would be on their backs if they did.

They may cross subsidise some activities - but no actual net profit.

They are not expected to run at a loss either.

Didn't bother replacing photo licence as the paper one is still valid.

  • have recently renewed my licence as photocard had expired. new one has been returned minus the plastic wallet i sent it back in. having googled a bit I have discovered that the DVLA no longer issue the plastic wallets with licences and do not return any sent to them (to save on postage apparently) - they do not advertise this on the renewal form of course. so i can purchase a new wallet on amazon/ ebay for approx £6 (straight out of DVLA's bin, cynical me thinks!) or risk losing either part of the licence and paying DVLA for a new one! SO BE WARNED, KEEP HOLD OF YOUR PLASTIC WALLET!!
  • Tried looking on the DVLA site as well as calling them to see if this is really needed at all legally, and basically got nowhere(going from automated menu to automated menu).Reason was my new one arrived this week after usual 10 year expiry, told this neighbour I was visiting about it(who hadn't even heard of such a thing),has the basic usual license.
Went to the local police office, out of curiosity, who basically scratched their collective heads, thought it was a legal requirement and advised me,or neighbour to contact DVLA to clarify. Is there a definitive legal need to go through this photo renewal rigmarole at £24.50 a pop,or will your paper license suffice on it's own for the forseeable future?
(Apologies if license should be licence,I can never remember!)

If she has the old one part paper licence, then she can keep it. Only those with 2 part licences (paper + photocard) need to pay out for new photocards.

I also can't see how the dvla can justify £20 for print and posting a card & a4 price of paper?
When you consider the extensive overt and covert security features implemented within your photocard, you'll soon realise this isn't a simple piece of plastic knocked up on a home PC and printer.

The fee also includes the admin and postage, not to mention unlimited free address changes. Changing where you live is not necessarily your choice, but looking after a card to ensure it isn't lost or stolen, on the other hand, is your responsibility.

i use my driving license as my ıd abroad and it keeps my passport safe at home so 20 quid is a bargain--its illegal to go out unidentified in a lot of societies. people admire my driving license because i am a European and many here would sell their mother to be one of the EU race!!
