Freeview TV, no remote

I bought a Sony Bravia TV, HD ready with built-in Freeview, which I got cheap as there was no remote (ex-display model).
The shop assistant recommended a universal remote, which I bought, but never got to work, as my tv model was not listed and I couldn't get it to tune in. I've had it too long to take back now.

My Tv is plugged into a Sky satelite receiver, although I'm not subscribed to Sky anymore, but I use the Sky remote to change channels.

The problem is I can only get certain channels, I can't get Ch5 or Fiver or ITV1+1 yet I can get ITV1, 2 etc

My son has a Freeview TV in his bedroom and he can get all the freeview channels, no problem.

Please can someone tell me how I can get them on mine?:)

Thank you

  • Is there not a menu button on the TV which you can use to get into the onscreen menu ? Which model is it, and have you still got the manual?

Do you have an actual tv aerial plugged into the tv, rather than just the sky plugged in? I presume you do have an external aerial if your son can get the freeview channels.

Most tvs do have buttons on the somewhere, just in case you can't use the remote. Sometimes hidden behind a panel or something.

If you can find the model number from the rear of the set then you will most likely be able to obtain a replacement remote that will operate all of the TV functions.
If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you!

Hi and thanks for your replies

Yes there is a menu button along the top of the tv, and I have tried tuning in the digital channels, it scans them, but doesn't find them.
    It's a KDL32U2000. I never got a manual with it either.

I don't have an external or internal aerial, only the Sky box. My son has a plasma telly which is run through an old video (using the inbuilt aerial)

Yes I've looked on ebay/Amazon etc, the remotes are available but I can't afford one at the minute.

Thanks again for all the replies, maybe I will just have to put up with the few channels I've got until my money situation improves:o

I doubt that's correct - I don't know of any video recorders that have internal aerials.

But if it is true then you must be in an incredibly strong Freeview signal area, so you may find that just connecting a simple indoor aerial to your Sony will allow it to pick up Freeview channels.

Regarding your universal remote: Sony use pretty much the same remote control codes for a huge range of models - simply select a few similar-looking Sony model numbers and you are bound to find one that works.

I have a feeling that the description of the problem might be missleading.

Perhaps the channels the OP is watching are not freeview channels at all but channels picked up by the sky reciever only.

Some channels that are broadcast by freeview are scrambled on sky. Since the sky subscription has expired that may be why some channels are not available.

Perhaps the OP can tell us what channle ch5 is on his remote to help clear up this point. Is it 5 (freeview) or 105 (not sure if this is correct as I don't have sky).

Just asked my son again and he says its an indoor aerial which he runs through his video, i have no idea why ( as you can tell I'm not very technically minded..lol)

I will have a look at the other remotes,..thanks :)

Ahhh that could make sense..Channel 5 is 105. I have just tried switching from sky to tv on the remote and it comes up with channel 4 ( I tried ch4 as an example) selected programme is not tuned then in the top right hand corner it says 004 digital :o
