Hi there,
I have done a search but couldn't find much. Just wondered if anyone had used "Just MOTs" for their MOT? My car is due in March and I'm trying to decide whether to go to Just MOTs or a council run test centre?
Any experiences?
Many thanks

As a rule i would always use a garage that do repairs, anyone doing the same job day in day out can become complacent and mot testers are no different. If a mechanic is just doing testing day in day out then they lose the hands on experience of knowing how cars work. A mechanic repairing the cars frequently, learns which cars may have a little give here and there or a little play in the rack etc. As an example, i worked as a tester many years ago and in 4 weeks i failed a model of car 3 times for having excess play in the rack, i gat a bit worried after the 3rd time so contacted the dealers to be told that this was how they were designed. The point im trying to make is that a mechanic working on the cars aswell as testing them would have spotted this.

:rotfl: It does make sense - thanks. Do you think the same applies to Council Run MOT test centres?
Thanks for the replies. I thought that as they weren't in the market for making money on repairs they may be a bit more impartial and pass/fail on an honest basis.0 -
It is all a question of trust really. The accepted wisdom is that a garage that only deals with MOTs has nothing to gain by failing everything on spurious details.
That is, of course, quite true. But it's a pain in the neck to be constantly taking your car to and from the garage to be fixed up. And as paddedjohn says, a lot of the test is left to the discretion of the examiner -- and a guy who is dealing with cars every day (or is in the same establishment as someone who is) is going to have more of an eye for what is and isn't a problem in marginal cases.
If you have a garage that you've been going to for years and you know you can trust, if they do MOTs then that's the place you should be sending your car to.0 -
I go to MOT only places and it DOES happen that testers at garages are pressured to get business for the garage. Maybe they're only one-offs but it does go on. Mind you, the tester can ignore his boss. Please do not quote spam as this enables it to 'live on' once the spam post is removed.
