Thanks 201, thats a clearer version of the one pasted onto the HDUK site - that's where I got my info that this pc comes with excel and word, which would be fab for me!

Closed.... I know, I have this desktop, which I could get running faster and most definitely will have a go at. I'm keeping it as we do need 2 machines due to the number of users fighting for MY chair :D I dont want to buy a lappy tho as a 2nd one, since I know I'll drift back to this one, leaving the kids to use the new machine. I'd prefer a desktop (and I'm house boss, so I get newest/fastest/bestest lol). I have some info below, and hope it's what you were asking about?

    Thank you!!

    Oh yes! New machine...new issue!

I will look for the aldi preloaded crap and try to uninstall. As for security, it comes with a free trial of something. Should I delete something and add the avast5 one you (closed) mention in your master class for sorting out slow pcs? Should I be deleting or adding some kind of firewall? I guess I need to clean it of preinstalled stuff and re-add what I need, but am not sure how to and dont want to mess up!

On the performance tab, everytime I do anything on the pc, the CPU usage jumps up to 100%. Is that important?

No, what a numpty, I missed out a 5 - its 1555184. I bet you guessed my mistake!!!
uninstall inbox toolbar, mcafee, and if you are happy to, eset. Install avast, and follow the rest of the guide in post 10
Yes I'm happy to if avast will do the same job anyway. Eset keeps telling me it may be out of date anyhow :o

start, run, msconfig - startup tab, disable these from startup

Ok, will do. The scanner/printer is used a lot. I print and copy and scan most days. When you say I can use those manually I'm not sure what you mean? It prints and copies automatically, and I open up paper port to use the scanner. Would I still be able to do that if I disable that list, or should I leave some (which?) of those in, given the frequent usage?

    Thank you!

these are the things related to the printer/scanner, I doubt you need them all running, especially the indexsearch, all the time

I would try avast instead of eset

By running manually, I mean set up an icon pointing to the exe's above, then if you need to monitor inks etc, click the status monitor icon, brmfcwnd

Ok ta, I'm just about to start all of that now.

If I delete those printer ones, will it still print when I press the print button, and will I still have paperport listed in my list of programmes, to open up? I open that up manually anyway, I dont have it open always (to my knowledge!!)

you aren't deleting anything, just stopping them running automatically at startup, which can be reversed by putting the tick back in the msconfig box.

If you are referring to pressing a button on the printer, then one of the programs is probably required for that functionality, not sure which one.

leave them if you are worried.
