Aldi computer offer

Can you tell me how you managed to get them to reserve one for you please0 -
I have more or less the same Aldi/Medion model from 18 months ago, and have been very happy with it. This new one has just a few more bells and whistles (like a bigger hard disk, one USB 3 port, and so on). Note that from Aldi it has a 3-year warranty, which is very good. But you have to use your own screen (or buy a new one!), since it doesn't come with one.
I echo the previous comment about getting to the store early so that you are first in the queue and doing a recce beforehand to ask from where they will be selling them. I thought they would be sold from the back of the store, but it was from a locked area quite close to the tills at the front! I got #5 of the 6 available, once I had dashed to the front... Stocks of these PCs are usually very limited. You could try seeing if you can reserve one in advance, but it would surprise me if they allow that.0 -
This pc is discussed here:

But there are cheaper ones here if you don`t want to spend £400:

They are both free and run easily on older hardware. It does have a reasonable learning curve.. but usually kids pick it up quite easy (my 10 year old cousin was given his first Ubuntu box at Xmas and he's getting pretty good at it)
Openoffice (which is free too) will open word documents etc, so will handle that!

The computer magazine article which is pasted onto hotdeals suggests that this new one will come with a limited office - excel and word - installed. If it does, that will do me for now. If not, and I have to buy office for mine, then I think my son should be able to use it on my old machine too - might be simpler for his first attempt to stick to what we know best?*** Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly ***

I phoned the head office for the north west on 01616551284 (from saynoto0870.com). I asked a lady there which of my local stores would be getting the most stock in, what time they opened etc. She offered to ask my local store to reserve one for me! She phoned them, then phoned me back to say it was done and I was to go in on Sunday and ask for the manager, or tell any member of staff who I was. I did double check it with her, because if that doesnt work, they'll all be gone by opening time! But she seems confident. I will go at 10am anyway. She did ask me to turn up fairly early so that they dont waste a sale if I didnt turn up! If I miss out, then sobeit - have a look at the Dell options kindly linked to above suzie, just in case!
I have to say a huge thanks once again to you all. I realise (mainly from HDUK) that a better machine could be built, or bought, or cheaper etc. But given that this is more than good enough for me, has a reliable (from stories here and HDUK) warranty, is both reasonably low price and value for money......I think it will do nicely for me. So thankyou. I knew I could rely on MSEers to confirm or destroy my suggestion!!*** Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly ***

Wouldn't a laptop give you (ie the household) more flexibility, once you've sped your old one up? hijackthis log?

Hi closed, I've swapped between desktops and laptops, and definitely prefer a desktop for my main pc. I find that the screen on a lappy is too close, whereas on a desktop I can move it further away. I spend a lot of each day staring at it so it makes a difference.
A lappy WOULD be better in that I could use it on my lap in front of the telly in the evening....but that doesnt outweigh the downsides to the screen being so close.
Thanks for your suggestion*** Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly ***

you've already got a desktop. post the hijackthis log to find the cause of slowness, takes 30 seconds!!
