Check your Tax coding !!!!!!!!!

Have just received my tax coding for 2011/12 and like most of you I just put it aside.
DONT!!!!
When I looked at it again, they have overestimated one of my benefit payments, even though the correct figures are on the DWP website, and worse, they have assumed my income is £21000 (yes thats21K) more than it has ever been, thus reducing my age related personal allowance (Im over 65)
If I hadnt noticed it I would have paid loads of tax on my meagre works pension instead of none at all.
Only problem now is spending 2 days on hold to get it put right!
So all of you out there.....CHECK THE FIGURES

I also received the wrong tax code. I get a REALLY meagre private pension (less than £3.000 a year plus £1.400 from state pension!! I do NOT get any benefits, I am 70. I was puzzled to find they had taken off £1 lol lol off my private pension. I telephoned the tax office, (must have spent over £5 waiting to talk to someone grrrrrrrrrrh) When I did get through to a human being (at least I THINK he was!) I just could NOT get through to them that I was 70 yrs of age my personal allowance was over £9.490 and all I had coming in was £4.500. He just would NOT listen and said everyone had to pay tax!!!! He FINALLY agreed to send me a new tax code 249p which replaces 251p. The mind boggles! Needless to say no apology was forthcoming.
As you say, people must check very carefully indeed anything they receive from the Tax office

249P is worse than 251P and would result in a tax deduction from your £3000 private pension.

What are the deductions to your allowances for the 249P code to be calculated.

No I do NOT get £140 a week a week from my state pension! I get the amount of:£30 per week, and that is it. I honestly don't know what to do now, it is so difficult trying to get in touch with them

Have you got the coding notice there?

If so please tell us how the code has been calculated.

Hi, This is how they worked it out: New Tax code 6 April 2010 to 5th April 2011 Which replaces 215P. You need a tax code so that prudential South can work out how much tax to take off the payments they make to you. We have worked out your Tax code but need you to check that our information about you is correct. The worng Tax code could mean you pay too much or too little Tax.

    Personal allowance £9490

    Other earnings (or pension) -£5376

    State pension _£1577

    Gross Interest _£ 39 -£6992

    £2498

_____________________________________________________________________________The total amount I have coming in from all sources is £4548.60 p.a.

It is (obviously) the deduction of £5376 which is causing the problem. You indicate, from your earlier posts, that this income source simply doesn't exist? And I presume it hasn't figured in earlier year Codes ...... where only the State Pension and Gross interest should be deducted.

You can either ring them again (try early morning .... less of a wait and hope you get someone more amenable?) or write to them. But if you write it will take longer to resolve and you will finish overpaying tax this year.

they got my husbands tax code wrong as well
they somehow estimated that he will be earning £62000 this year so had to pay 40 % tax on his second job
do they really think if he was earning that much he would need a second job ????
when they looked back through his records they can clearly see that he has NEVER earnt that much and probably never will do
what on earth do they do in that tax office ???

Sorry Gatita - just trying to work out the deductions - seems you will have to ask for an explanation regarding the deduction of 5376 - HMRC are lurching from one disaster to the next it would appear!!

It really beggars belief doesn't it! Today I got another letter from Prudential informing me that they would now be deducting another £4 month in tax!!!!! Just WHERE do the Tax office they get these figures from? I would Have thought I had one of the most simple cases to work out the tax code........... I wonder just how many people have no idea their codes are wrong.
What REALLY enrages me is that I have to chase them up, spend money I can ill afford on phones calls hanging on for ages, and then to be treated like an idiot! I m SO ANGRY
