I haven't read all the posts but wanted to share my experience.

My son did horribly with his GCSE's. We moved here from the states and he was not behind but thrown into a different types of classes that he wasn't used to. His grades suffered but he kept going. I can't even recount how many times the whole class was punished over 1 and I feel the whole class suffers on the learning side from that. I tried communicating with the school several times and always got brushed off. I really wanted my son to have a tutor to help him. All I did was worry, I worried he wouldn't get into college or university.

When his scores arrived, I thought that was it, he was through. His math and english was so bad but the school couldn't say if he could resit them because they didn't know when the teachers would be available. He was left in limbo at the end of the school year. I feel that he was just brushed off. They were trying to get him to go for business classes and really pushed him. I was quite adamant that he wasn't going to the same school for 6th form. Not after how he was treated and being pushed around.

Well, he ended up getting into the class he wanted, an engineering class (BTEC First Diploma) at our local college. He has Maths and English on top of his regular studies and he is excelling so much. He has lots of passes but many more Merits and Distinctions. He has really come on in his studies and working hard and the biggest difference is that he enjoys it!

I would just keep supporting him to get through his exams and look at what education you can get him into with the scores he will have. He may have to start a bit lower but it's not over for him. Let him know that he has your support and let him know to just do his best and that will be good enough. Get some college brochures and go through them with him and narrow down his choices. If he doesn't fit the criteria, still apply. My son needed 4 GCSE's at C or above, he only had 3 but after the interview and everything, they offered him a spot. Tell him to give it his all at the interview and maybe you could send a letter to the school showing your support for you son and that you know he will work hard. I'm so glad I didn't give up and I'm so proud of my son.

He's just applied for the next BTEC LEVEL 3 and they are giving him a spot. When he is done with that, he wants to go to Uni to study Engineering and he will have enough points to do that. I know it's all stressful now but everything will be ok, just work as a team.

    Best wishes
