Narrow fitting shoes

My daughter has extremely narrow feet. Narrower than a D fitting. I haven't been able to find her shoes to fit for ages. Does anyone have any idea where I can get her some shoes? She's 11 years old and a size 3.5

Is startrite going to the obvious pre dated answer youre not looking for? I had really narrow feet when i was a youngen, still have really and my mum went to a local independent shoe shop that stocked alot of brands that had to be ordered in for me. This was in the 90's though, i'd have hoped things would have advanced by then!

  • In our town there used to be an old fashioned shoe maker. They measured your feet and made what you needed. It was the same prize as a pair of Startrites or Clarks. It is is possible to buy some shoe inlays that will make it more comfortable to walk in a D fitting. Would it be something that you could ask your GP about?
My daughter has a size 3, D width fitting and even that is very hard to find. So if you find some, let me know!

Hi, I used to work for a mail order company specialising in narrow fitting shoes, however they were mostly aimed at the adult market and not many styles were really suitable for the younger generation. The company is called James Inglis and they have a website and also a catalogue. Hope that helps.

I have 2 children with C-D width feet. Startrite are the only fitted option I have found; we usually buy ours in Russell & Bromley. However, some of the Russell & Bromley branded shoes come up suitably narrow, as do several European branded shoes. There is also an excellent, old fashioned shoe shop in Southampton that stocks shoes for narrow feet; called Browns I think?

You're lucky that she is only a size 3.5 at that age; my 10 year old is a size 6 and her options for fitted school shoes are almost becoming non-existant.

I think Startrite do 3 or 4 shoes in a D width fitting at that size. We never have the recommended (thumbs width) growing room and buy shoes fairly frequently because of the width issue. For instance, DD2 might fit in a 4.5D, but needs a narrower fitting (ie the unmade C width) if we went up to a size 5. So in general, we size down, although clearly we always buy shoes that fit with some room for growth.

I can clearly remember a shop assistant telling us a pair of (D width) school shoes were a suitable fit with three (yes three!) insoles in them! We left the shop empty handed.

If you ever find yourself in Italy or Spain, check out the shoes. They must have narrow feet typically!

Clarks have only very recently introduced a D width fitting (last year I think), because we have been unable to shop there for years.

Having said that, we have found their shoes too deep, even in this narrowest width and find Startrite the only real option.

Hush Puppies shoes go down to a 'D' fit, and I would recommend finding which shoe shops near you sell them and give them a go.

Start Rite are supposed to do 'C' fitting shoes, but I don't know of any shops that stock them and they are rumoured to be impossible to get from the website, but it's worth a try. :)

I had that same talk with a Russel and Bromley assistant. That just can't be comfortable, so we didn't buy any shoes there.
I meant an orthopedic inlay. I know that they are specially made if you need them but I am not sure if that is NHS funded.

Do you manage to get them at clarks/starbright/hush puppies? My DD is a D/E, DS E, but everytime I go there, they say they are out of the size E let alone D. They then always proceed to convince me that they can fit in a F.... I suspect they only order a couple of shoes in these sizes and if you are not there as soon as they are out, you're out of luck (tried three different clarks last time...)
