How to connect to a network on iphone 4 while abroad

I wonder if you can help.

My DH has an Orange iphone 4 and it is the first time he has gone abroad with it.

He is calling from the hotel room phone to say he can't get a network connection, so can't use his mobile.

Can anyone give me an idea on what he needs to do he will call me back in an hour.

I have searched the internet but can't see anything to help

Thanks

I've got an iPhone 3GS and assuming it's the same you go to Settings and then Carrier. Then wait for all the foreign network carriers to come up and select one. Simple as that.

Also, if he clicks 'Automatic' in the same settings menu, it will automatically select a network if the signal drops out in the future.

The network might not have enabled the SIM for international roaming.

If the phone is set to pick up a network automatically then he will need to speak to his network in the UK.

FWIW I've never had to select a network manually on my iPhone 4 when travelling - it's always picked it up automatically.

Thanks, I think he has roaming switched off, when we went to Dover for a family visit recently I remembered hearing some people were connected to France, so he switched them off then.

Is it possible to stay on roaming switched off while he searches for the carrier?

If you have authorisation to access the account, I'd advise to call Customer Services to check that Roaming is enabled at the network side of things. Although Data Roaming can be turned off on the phone itself, it isn't possible to turn off Roaming for calls.

It is possible that he had turned off automatic network selection when you were in Dover, to force the phone to only connect to the Orange network. If this is the case, and Roaming is enabled, then going into Settings and then Carrier and then turning automatic network selection back on may resolve this.

    I hope this helps.
