First Bus Leeds - Total Rip-off

My other half took a bus journey from home to school to pick up DD.

The bus fare charged (as it was a single journey) was £2... the total distance for this journey was 1.1 miles...

How can First Bus get away with daylight robbery. It would have been far cheaper for me to drive her door to door (if I was not at work) or for a few pence more she could have got a taxi there!!!

If I had 5 people in the car (including me) and travelled the same journey it would have cost me about £1 taking into account fuel/insurance/repairs, but to do that journey on the bus for 5 would have been £10 !!!!!!!!:eek::eek::eek:

If First Bus Leeds want people out of cars and onto buses, they really need to look at sensible pricing, as at the moment I see no reason at all to get out of my car and start getting 2 buses to get me to work, which would also mean getting up earlier and getting home later and also the possibilty of missed busses...

Rant over.....

And using Journey Planner, public transport would take 40 minutes compared to 10 mins by car and I would have to change buses half way through .... the extra 1 hour a day is spent with my daughter.

And checking the CO2 emissions 0 it is better for the environment if I use the car. 3.4kg for the car 3.5kg for the bus

  • For such a short journey public transport is never going to profitably compete with personal modes of transport. But 1.1 miles is walkable surely?

yeah it's like a 20 min walk, you would still spend the time with your daughter and you and her would get fit and healthy in the process.

all for the cost of what? a 20p organic banana

£2 may seem expensive for a short journey, but lets not forget that you are paying for convenience. £2 to get there quickly and avoid being late doesn't sound so bad.
Personally I'm no great fan of Firstgroup but in this case I don't think they are as bad as you are making out.
    Just my opinion of course.

Who can we blame for that?

I think you will find the buses in London now have very limited fare bands, result very expensive per mile for very short journeys (1 or 2 stops) but a lot better value (ppm) for long journeys.

I live in Stevenage, if I go one stop (could be as little as 100yds) its £1.60, but I can travel 3-4 miles for the same fare. Likewise its only 1.5 times fare for a return and only just over double for a day ticket.

You take the bus to travel 100 yards down the road? :rotfl:

I was talking about the extra hour a day I get because I drive to work. I do not take the daughter into school.

Usually mornings are take DD and OH to her school then continue my journey to work. If I took the bus, I could not do that as I would need to set of even earlier. And OH and DD would have to get a different bus.

Also, I finish work at 5.30 and my OH starts at 6 so that would be impossible if I took the bus.
