Blackberry internet charges on T-mobile contract

Hi. I currently have a texts and minutes contract with T-mobile and have recently bought a Blackberry phone into which I have put the SIM. my daughter uses the phone and we have now got the first bill since using the Blackberry and there have been a lot of charges for internet data. She is using homw WI-fi or hotspots to connect so why is she being charged? We have been through the phone settings and it seems to be set to connect via wi-fi. Am I missing something here. I am happy for her to use the phone on the internet but not to pay extra for it!! Any help gratefully received!!

Is she connecting through WiFi or internet?
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

Has she set up an email acc? And has she had the BB addon put on her acc?

The BB will be checking any email acc every few seconds 24 hours a day, if you have the BB addon that's all cover. Any data use will be charged if she doesn't
  • She is connecting throgh Wi fi. I don't think she has used e-mail. Is there something we should be setting up with Blackberry to ensure that internet use via wi-fi is free?

There was a thread here a few weeks back about BB talking to the RIM server all the time (which I now can't find). She maybe on wifi at home, but, I think, the phone using data all the time, so when she leave the house it'll switch to mobile data.

To be honest, the whole point of a BB is to use data, she really needs to have the BB addon put on her acc. None of the BB service (push email, BB messenger etc) will work without it.
  • I guess there is a charge for that? Do I just contact blackberry customer services?

It's £5 a month on just about all the networks.

Just give the CS depts of whichever networks she's on a call and they'll add it.

All the BB features will then work and she shouldn't get any out of bundle costs coming up again.
  • I find the Blackberry data charges to be better than other smartphones. Some people have been getting horrendous bills. I have a Blackberry Torch, had Blackberrys for about the last 4 years, and the largest bill I have ever had is £70 and that was using MSN in Norway for a hour.

Blackberrys are connected to the internet via RIMs servers and are constantly checking for email/messages. The £5 pm add on will possibly save you £100s.
