Sneaky pricing at supermarkets!

Have noticed a growing trend at ASDA and Tesco recently. For example: if you buy an extra large box of Fairy washing powder as opposed to the just large one the price per kilo is more for the larger pack. Obviously if you buy in bulk you are assuming that it will be better value and they are working on the basis that you won't read the small print. Both the above stores do this. The other trick is that they have started to charge more per kilo on their "value" ranges than for the normal stuff. I noticed this in Tesco with value rice against their own brand Easy Cook rice. Again they trust that you will assume the value range is cheaper. Also on several occasions I have noticed that ASDA own brand loo roll is actually more expensive than the branded stuff, (you know, the puppy one.) Yesterday In ASDA it was cheaper per kilo to buy a bag of lovely tree hugging organic potatoes from a small grower than the ASDA huge bin "cheap" muddy ones.

So the trick is -always check the price per kilo in small print on the shelf!

I always do this and you are right, often multiples of a smaller size work out cheaper, it's like a constant maths exam :)

  • It dives me  in our local Mr.T there at it with the milk at the moment. I buy the 1% milk which is 88p for 2L or £1.18 for 3L good value :D but they put the 2L price under the 3L milk and vice versa. I picked up the 3L believing it was 88p. The info+price tags are practically on the floor don't know how elderly people manage to read them.

    Asda yesterday.

    Fairy dishwasher tablets. 42 pack = £6. Family pack of 90 = £20.42.

So 2 x 42 packs = £12 for 84 tablets, that means if you buy the family pack you are paying an extra £8.42 for just 6 extra tablets! :rotfl::eek:
  • I check every price, every shop. In Tesco the value and discounter ranges vary as to which is cheaper for things like juice, tuna etc. Plus big isn't always best - in pasta and rice often the smaller sizes are as cheap if not cheaper. Caveat emptor!

Drives me mad as well. I ended up having to take 3 packs of pork back to shop because they put the special offer sign in front of the pork that wasn't part of the offer. Lucky I looked at receipt as quite often I don't. I ended up spending 18 pounds instead of 9 pounds. It really isn't fair. Many of us have to take our toddlers with us to the supermarket and so it just isn't possible to check all the small print on labels or do the maths with them screaming away in the background.
  • I nearly got caught out by the liquid hand soap in the pumps. The refills (just with a screw cap and no pump) were actually more expensive than the ones in the bottles with the pump. Hmmmmm.

that's because some people will pay a bit more to be environmentally friendly...

I'd buy the cheaper one and make sure the bottle is recycled...

This can be down to economy of scale.
They may sell eg 80% of the products in the large size pack.

    This the following
    1) less change over on manufacturing size
    2) Fairy can buy the boxes at a better price from the cardboard manufacturer as larger volumes.
    3) easier to pallet up and fits better on lorrys
    4) some times bigger packs need a thicker guage of packaging as they have to surport heavier weights. This costs more
    5) the manufacturer may have a quicker through put into portioning smaller packs so it decreases their labour costs per kg.

    even for Asda
    1) they may get more smaller packs on to the shelf per 100kg of powder etc. so profit potential per square meter of shelf space allows the product to be sold more cheaply

or they may be just mistake by head office. not every one is perfect.

These are more point than specifically aimed at Fairy packs as this may not be true for the above product.
