Sambucus how big a plot do you have??????
One garden, one full size allotment and 4 schools
One greenhouse at home, one large greenhouse at school, one medium greenhouse at school and we've just bought 2 10ft by 20ft polytunnels.....
ETA: I had this amount of seeds before I did the schools work....and will probably have the same once I'm done.If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
Reading this thread reminds me of my collection. However I work with my habi t and concentrate on high value seeds eg cucumber bought at end of year discount price and vegetables we eat a lot of such as salad leaves and beetroot. (3 packets of beetroot is not excessive).
After all what are cupboards for.
However does everyone know just how many seeds are on ebay. I recently put a few surplus packets on and a day or two later could not find them amongst the thousands of items! So if you want to test whether you have a problem go to ebay and search for'Seeds'
This is not an ad for my one lot of seeds but there is a 2500 to 1 chance that you will view them0 -
I incorrectly said 2500 this was my narrow definition trying to find my seeds. There are 47,162 items for sale under seeds.
So test if you are a seed o holic ...go to ebay and view their items ( There are some great bargains!!!)0 -
So relieved this addiction isn't just me. However, the prize must go to SambucusNigra - buckets and shoeboxes - definite rehab help required there!!!
Gardeners !!!!!!!seed catalogues - love em
I have steered well clear as we are the same at the allotment. We went along to an allotment meeting where they had a copy for everyone to peruse and my husband dragged me away, reciting the famous words "OK, move away from the seed catalogue....."and now I'm in the allotment there's a big order book from Kings Seeds theremy mother in law is a merchandiser for a couple of the big seed companies, and at the end of the season ends up with several bin liners full of seeds which she is aloud to keep what she wishes before giving them back to the company, so as you can guess I have so many seeds all free
OMG!!! Best job in the world! Any vacancies??I wonder what proportion of a seed company's output is never sown?
Must be high - I am still opening and sowing seed I bought in 1996!
@soupdragon10 - spreadsheet - I bow to your organised mind and think you need to just think January like thoughts when planting your autumn broadbeans and they won't spot the oversight of being planted late!
@howardtog - go on ebay? Are you kidding? My husband would kill me! He had to drive miles away to the post office sorting office to pick up an ebay parcel that had 6 red duke of york seed potatoes in!!! I ordered them off ebay because I didn't want to waste £3 buying a huge bag and giving a lot away on freecycle. I think the petrol cost more than £3 picking them up from the sorting office!!!
@Laura - how did the paddy field experiment turn out? Perhaps an idea to test out on the flooded corner of the allotment site........
Love hearing about everyone's addictions - makes one feel so much better about oneself!!!
So, let's play on the addictions - how do people organise their seeds - alphabetically, by planting month, by type, etc? I keep mine in planting month order (more or less). I did have them stored in a concertina file but the March and April months were oversized compared to other months! Now I have a drawers for Jan, Feb, March, April, May+ then one for greenmanure, pens and labels. It means I can take a drawer out with me to the greenhouse, conservatory, garden or allotment at a time to plant.
Come on now, don't be shy!!! This is kind of MSE therapy!!!
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

O....o....organise?! What is this word?
They all go into a giant plastic airtight box and every time I want a packet, I get to sift through the entire contents. I did it today, looking for my onion seeds.
Amazing what I find in there, sometimes.
My only concession to organisation is keeping records of what was sown, when and how, then a summing-up after the season's over.
Well, that and a garden diary that extends to the length of a short novel every year.
But seeds? In order? Ha!0 -

I'm impressed! I manage the what is sown, when and how - but am usually so busy harvesting (and the seed label long gone) I forget completely what was what and never update my record so have to rely on my memory to serve me well for remembering!
I did keep the empty seed packets so I had half a chance at remembering varieties of plants, but I really wasn't good at checking back - and of course, once the gardening !!!!!! magazines arrived, any good intentions of planting the good varieties went out of the window once I am lured to the dark side of trying completely new varieties! :rotfl:

Ah, yes - missing label syndrome! I found myself staring at a raised bed today thinking 'So just which cabbage variety is that that is doing so hideously'? and 'Well! So much for bad weather resistance in that cauliflower!'
Still (in case anyone cares) Minicole saved the day.Been a good small cabbage that. Now all I have to do is find the seed packet for next year!0
