Porting query

My orange contract is due to finish in 2 months.
I've found another deal and have in the past ported the number when I change networks.
Unfortunately the new deal is another orange deal.
What is the best way to go- port to PAYG with a different network and port to Orange?
If so which is the easiest to port to and from? or
Any other suggestions

Are you saying that you're effectively cancelling one contract with orange and looking to start a new one with a better deal? If so, you should just be able to get a PAC from orange and then (bizarre as it sounds) call them up on your new phone and give it back to them.

Have you called Orange customer services though? They may just give you the new deal you're looking to start as you're going to be staying with them. Might save you a lot of hassle.

I thought porting your number was just when you changed networks?
I had three different contracts over the years with 3 and kept the same number without being issued a PAC.
  • I thought that porting was when you moved between networks. If I ask for a PAC code from orange will they accept the same code back again? When I called orange re matching the external deal I found they could not get anywhere near matching it which is why I'm in this position

Porting is for moving between networks. If you're already with Orange, they won't accept a PAC that they have issued to transfer your existing number to the new account.

You could just ask Orange to transfer your new number. This is relatively straightforward... but Orange will probably refuse to do it. I suspect you got a good deal "for new customers only" - they expect existing customers to either go through the inconvenience of changing phone numbers to get the good deals, or to pay over the odds to keep their number. Still, it won't hurt to ask. They can do it - O2 have done this for me in the past (but it took a lot of work to convince them!).

The only other alternative is to port to another network, then port back to Orange on the new deal.
  • Thanks for the advice so far

I did think it was unlikely I could get a PAC form orange and give it back to them.

Porting to PAYG on another network seems to be the other option- anyone had experience of porting on and off PAYG on any networks and would they say how easy they found it

I am about to do the same. Moving from O2 to O2.

Only thing i can say is i got my PAC within 24 hours from O2 (one phone call plus short online form). that was through CPW though.

O2 are alone it offering this. All the other networks don't like it and you have to port out to another network and back again.

They certainly didn't offer it to me until they ported my Virgin number to the wrong O2 account (leaving me one O2 account with no phone numbers associated with it, and another account with two phone numbers), completely screwed up the billing, cut me off three times with no explanation and were unable to reconnect me instantly, and kept promising that a manager would phone me back to resolve the situation.

After a few weeks getting nowhere, never being called back as promised, I phoned them up every hour on the hour on an 0800 number, each time reminding them that the average customer service call costs £10 to £15 to process and that so far they had probably spend maybe £300 on free support calls without resolving my problem.

After three days of this, they fixed my account and sent me a cheque to cover the cashback claim that had been invalidated by them moving my phone number between accounts twice then closing the original account.

It certainly wasn't something that they wanted to offer me as part of their "standard" support! That was a couple of years ago, though, so maybe their policy has changed.
