Car Hire Additional Driver

Has anyone any experience of adding additional driver after start of rental. Background is my wife will arrive in Marseille and pick up hire car. I will not arrive until the following week and want to be added as an Additional Driver. My wife will be picking me from airport in hire car so my thoughts were my wife and I should be able to go to Car Rental Office with relevant documentation and get me added as an Additional Driver. Has anyone any experience of doing this? Thanks in advance.
