    Not with you on this.
Are you saying the op should be paying £10 to £20 to have the job done, not the £720 VW have quoted, as that's a lot of difference.
My experience of this problem is that it would be the excentric that needs replacing. That is a £3 part, and sometimes you need some springs/retaining clips that may take the bill up to £5-10. I am guessing that the Dealer has given a worst case scenario quote based on the customers explenation, and if they find that the excentric is broken it will only cost the price of the parts and approx 20minute job per side (£60-70 total bill).

Without seeing the car, it is very difficult to diagnose either way. My guess is based on what usually goes wrong with Polo door locks, but equally it could be the door locks, the central locking system, the convenience system (if applicable), etc...

Thank you for taking the time to reply...you have certainly brightened up my day and hope that you are indeed correct.

I will certainly pop it up to the dealer for them to have a look at...presumably then they are able to diagnose the excentric by just trying the locks and would not need to strip down the door and charge the £200+ original quote for doing this?

The inner door card may need to come off to check it, but that's not a huge job.

If I were you i'd 'suggest' that the fault is the excentric ket and ask if they can check to confirm (no money need change hands!), and if it turns out it is that, they should have the parts in stock and be able to fix it while you have a free coffee! If not, then you can say you'll call to re-book for the work once you've checked your diary & you've got a free diagnosis!

Done my daughters VW Bora with new paddles off ebay. Dont know about the Polo but on the Bora you can do them with out removing the door card. There is a hole in the door jam to release the barrel!

Edit: seems they are the same on the Polo instructions here!

  • just open the door and you should be able to see a screw that goes into the back of the handle, sometimes it's covered by a rubber gromit

    unscrew and remove handle

    replace broken parts
